I'm gonna be a senior in high school

i've been asked to tutor a rising junior this summer for the SATs. she is asking me what i charge, but i have no idea what i should be charging.
I had a private tutor who charged me $90 per hour to tutor me for cr. however, he was really experienced, and there's no way i'm ganna charge even half that much because i'm just a senior in high school.
so how much should i be charging? anyone know?

You may want to try craigslist for your area to get an idea of what the lower end of going rates are. As a senior in HS you will probably want to be closer to what @Zosilo said than $90/hr, which is a rate more typically associated with college graduates (at least) with significant experience. @netking: a good tutor and an elite SAT taker are not always the same person.

Except he already sent it out to dozens of people who could send it to others for free :D

I’m giving courses for maths and writing in the summer - no charge. It’s just a favor for a few friends, though I’m actually coming up with a program and such.
Also, 10-20$/hour should be adequate and fair.

I don’t mean to side with netking, but in regards to the above statement: they very often are. Mostly anyone with 800’s would have pretty much mastered the SAT and its “way of thinking”, so would be able to provide tips and, through that person’s very interaction with the pupil, bestow his help unintentionally. And no, I’m not kidding, and nor am I a superstitious moron. :D

OP: I think $15-20/hour is pretty fair seeing as some test-prep companies are charging thousands of dollars.

On a side note, I think I would have a moral problem charging for tips/tutoring on the SAT if anyone asked me to tutor them. I mean I personally think the test is biased towards the rich (see: allowing the TI-89 and see private test-prep companies/tutors), so I think charging would feed the unfair cycle. Meh…just my belief, not like it matters.

Anyways good luck with the tutoring OP and congrats on your score!

To the OP, the rate could also depend on the socio-economics of the area and what the market will bear. In a more affluent area, you could charge more. For a sample, here’s one site that tells you what people are charging in California. For other
states, just replace the name of the state and hopefully, you’ll get some idea.
