Tutoring for SAT

I've done well on all my standardized tests. Not perfect score well, but definitely respectable by CC standards. I've built up a good reputation at my school because historically (I'm not trying to sound pretentious or anything) my school has not been very high-achieving.

I recently told my counselor, who has really helped me out this year, that I'm willing to tutor for the SAT and ACT and asked if she could recommend me if any students asked her for information on private test tutoring. She told me she would.

I went into her office this past week to ask her for information on a scholarship, and she asked me if I could tutor her daughter for the SAT. It struck me as an odd situation...how much should I charge her???

Thanks.

20 dollars an hour. dont sour a relationship over $

thats exactly what I dont want to do.

i'm from an area where almost all students just sit for the SAT, so i can't determine an average price for tutors. I don't know if even $20 would be considered a lot, especially since I can get a lot of good referrals if I help raise her daughter's score.

I work for Kaplan. They pay us $17/hour but charge them $125. We get very little business.

Just charge her what you'd charge any other student. ($15 or so should be fine.)

i charge 35 an hour, but i live in an area where tutoring is commonplace, and the parents paying for the tutoring are all millionaires...

in your situation, just tell her 20$. if she starts to act like that's a lot, just cave in and lower your price to 15 because your relationship with your GC is an important one. she's writing you a rec, don't forget it.

Yeah, to be reasonable, I would say ~$15/hour

i dunno but i wish i was in ur situation.. man do i wanna ace that SAT and ACT

$20 would be just a little too much imo.

I say go with $15

what did you get on the SAT anyway? if it was a 2200 then 15 would be okay. but 20 could be justified it was a 2340.

No, go with $15. It's better than minimum wage, and you'd like to keep a nice relationship with your counselor.

15, keep a good relationship with your GC.

I don't think it really matters what he got on the SAT.

Obviously you want someone who scored well to tutor, but I don't think that justifies charging more.

Jeez $35/hour - nice man. Sounds like you're making some nice cash. If I told anyone where I live that I'd charge $35/hour for tutoring they'd probably have a heart attack on the spot lol.

Thanks for your suggestions!

After reading this, I won't charge anything above $15 since she has been a helpful GC (and I don't want to lose that) and I come from an area where SAT tutoring is very uncommon.

I think $15 is reasonable.

I was thinking about this same type of thing the other day. I would make so much money tutoring kids at my school. I did mediocre by CC standars, but most of the kids at my school are shooting for average scores (and by average, I seriously mean average 1500-1700 range).
