A lot of people have been asking me to tutor them in math. How much does a tutor usually charge per hour? I have no idea what the "usual rate" is. Any ideas?

If you’re a high school student, a reasonable amount is 10-20 bucks an hour.

$15, but I have a 20 min commute to the girl’s house…

If you’re tutoring an upper division math class you can be asking anywhere from 25-50 an hour. Lower division math classes would generally run about 15-30.

$10-25, I’d say, but I always do it for free :).

I would say anywhere from 15 to 25 dollars would be a sufficient price. However, I believe it should be based on your experience, and the math level of the students.

Depends. Most people, I gave tutoring for free because they were low income. These were almost always kids who wanted to learn but didn’t have the parental resources to help them outside of school, so I was happy to do it for free.

However, when I was tutoring students who had rich parents that made their kids get a tutor in exchange for a new iPhone or something, I generally charged about $10 an hour. If they cooperated and truly wanted to learn, I rarely asked for money no matter how rich they were. If I was there to just be a means to an iPhone, then I charged money because it is a complete waste of time.

Moral: charge based on what the parent can afford.

^ Amen. Unless you’re in desperate need for money, try not to charge unnecessarily.

I tutored one girl this summer, after doing volunteer math tutoring at school. It was set up by my math teacher, and he told me to charge $20/hour, so that’s what I charged and the family was okay with that. Then they told me their address and I found out they live on a lake, so now I wish I had charged more :-)

wow wth. i have a job that pays me min wage to tutor kids at the library, i think i deserve more -_-
