How bad is the drinking there? are there lots of people that don't drink?

Im thinking about going to Cuse next year and I dont drink so i hope there are some people that are the same way

This is coming from a non-drinker.

You’ll always find people that don’t drink at all and you’ll always find people that drink on a regular basis.
I have plenty of friends who drink but most of these kids are smart enough to balance their study/social life. Of course you’ll find kids that aren’t so good with this balance but I don’t think it’s drinking is an issue you need to worry about before attending SU. In the end, it’s completely up to you.

I can’t address the drinking (I am a mom), but I can address some others!

Admission: My daughter was admitted to Newhouse (1380/2100), but without any $, so that must be pretty par for their course.

Program: We toured yesterday at Admitted students Day and were very impressed. The campus was looking great, with lots of new buildings (including Newhouse III and Whitman) and a new Bio complex almost complete. They gave an excellent presentation and what I liked most about the program in Newhouse was that you don’t declare a major till the end of sophomore year giving you an opportunity to really explore your options. You have to minor in an area OUTSIDE of Newhouse - again I think that is great to expand beyond communications to liberal arts and/or business. They have a few study abroad options that are tailored to newhouse kids so they don’t miss out on credits.

My husband is an alum (MA - Newhouse) as is my son (BA International Relations). Both had great experiences. Lots of school spirit and great alumni connections.

Good luck in your college hunt

Remember, the Film School at Syracuse is not Newhouse. You may want to consider the limited internship options in Upstate NY. Socal, New York and Miami are by far the three biggest production cities in the country, You may want to consider U Miami and FSU if you’re looking to stay clear of USC and NYU. You definitely would need to get your SAT’s up to be considered for those schools or Syracuse. Chapman in LA is a good production school (without the liberal arts of the other schools).

emr: Huh? In Newhouse, one of the concentrations is TRF; it stands for television, radio and film…What do you mean that the “film school at Syracuse is not Newhouse?”

Perhaps emr is referring to the Visual and Performing Arts School at SU (?)

The “limited internship options in Upstate NY” is not really an issue..most internships are in the summer and Syracuse has an extensive alum network in NYC and LA.

At the presentation, someone adressed the notion that there are limited internships in the city of Syracuse. The response was that as a mid sied market, Syracuse has lots of opportunities in TV, newspapers, etc and much less competition for those interships than NYC.

Sorry, I was thinking about the Visual and Performing Arts School. It’s the true film production department there that has more limited opportunities. Newhouse has tremendous internship opportunities.
