I was curious if I should talk with my roomate about a tv or should I get a tv tuner for my laptop. Anyone out there have a tv tuner for their laptop? How does it work. Im looking at the hauppauge products.

I'm looking into getting one. As for specifics as to how it works, I'm not 100% clear myself, but just read the descriptions I guess. I'm thinking PVR ConvertX for Macs. If you want to get a regular TV, by all means, discuss it with your roomie, but DON'T SPLIT THE COST. Maybe they can get the TV and you can get the DVD player or something...

oh i totally second not splitting the cost of the TV and appliances... instead each buy a couple diff items, because otherwise when the end of the year comes around its a huge mess trying to decide who gets to keep what (esp if for some reason you dont get along...)

Also check with your school's housing office or website to see if there are any established policies regarding a tv, cable access, frig, microwave, etc. It seems like there was a thread on cc not to long about about tv tuners for laptops.

i didn't have a tv in my room and most of my friends didn't either (i can think of one friend who did). i never had a lot of spare time to watch tv, but if we wanted to watch a movie or some SatC we would all pile together in the one room with the tv, or around someone's laptop.

TV in your room is kind of a waste and a distraction. Most of the TV watching is in the lounges with cable (you might have to pay for cable in your room).

Movies on the other hand are a bit more likely so make sure you can play them (almost every computer can these days). Personally I have video-in on my graphics card and I can hook it up to a VCR (ghetto TV-tuner card replacement) but I dont think I will even bring that as I refuse to pay for cable in the dorm and the one show I watch is the daily show (bittorrent here I come).

Depends on the school you attend... for example, I am going to get free cable!

Of course, I'll probably spend too much time watching television and not enough time studying./

I always just assumed that most kids got TVs just like they had laptops... I guess I was really wrong! I'm planning on bringing my TV . When I study or do menial work, I have the TV on or a DVD on. I sit on my bed and don't necessarily watch it but it's just background noise. Also, I frequently put in a DVD to watch as I fall asleep and also have people over.

19" monitor + klipsch promedia ultra 5.1 + big harddrive + high speed internet= no tv

videogamerx2: took the words straight out of my mouth.

though, college might filter away my bittorrent but I'll just set up a box when I go home for thanksgiving to grab the daily show for me and then I can grab it as an ftp or http download. Too bad my upload speed at home sucks.

http://www.easynews.com become a members there its like kazza and stuff but it is web bassed. has tons more stuff and all the downloads are top speed. But its 10 dollars a month. but you can get anything porn, music, games, movies, tv shows. This is how i get all my stuff

I doubt it has more than Kazaa, but I'm sure it is much faster. I prefer BT because even when a torrent does not transfer at high speeds, 10 torrents at the same time do :D

EasyNews is a newsgroup service. Everyone knows that there is a lot of stuff on newsgroups. Since EasyNews gives you access to a web interface, it makes searches relatively simple.

I know that, but newsgroup binaries, although lightning fast and quite numerous, are still not as large in quantity as kazaa, I would think

newsgroups are a strange thing these days. Its very hard to find a good source that actually serves the binaries. Its too bad that most ISP provided ones block them.

Yeah, I can affirm that for both SBC and Comcast > : (

Sometimes the cable tv hook up won't be near your desk making it a problem to hook up to a laptop tuner. If you're in a quad, the cable connection may be in the the common room. TVs are cheap enough, if you really want/need one to get a separate one.

that's where one of these http://www.x10.com/products/x10_vk54a.htm comes in :D
