TV's in College dorm for freshman??or stereo or alarm clock?

Ok so I have this free gift brochure for a 36" coby flat screen LED tv or a bose clock radio or bose sound stereo. Which would be most beneficial to have in a dorm room for you first year of college and for the next for years. A tv i could use to watch tv or play videogames once in a while. And a stero or cloack radio to just listen to music. Im starting college in summer 2012 so a stereo would be nice to blast some music. They are all free but I can only choose one...The links for each one are below..tell me which one you think i should get. Thanks!!

Bose Cloack Radio:
Bose | Wave radio II | Wave radio and music systems

Bose Stereo Sound System:
SoundDock Series II Digital Music System - Bose iPod Speakers and iPod Docking Stations - iPod Accessories

TV:

Haier 24" LED HDTV DVD Combo / LEC24B1380

THANKS!

Neither. Especially the TV. As a parent, I know I’m fighting a losing battle but do you really need the distraction?

These “free gift” promotions are generally liquidations of discontinued models, returned & refurbished product, or no-name brands that are no-name for a good reason. Sometimes you get a deal (I have - refurb’d PCs, camcorder that came with a real warranty from a reputable company), sometimes you don’t. Do you have to pay shipping, sales tax? “Free” often does not mean “free”. [At least they are not pushing a “free” vacation as long as you travel at your expense to the resort, pay a nominal processing fee, and agree to attend a “seminar” on their fantastic time-share vacation properties!]

At least the Bose products are from a real brand-name company. My serious audiophile friends consider Bose to be over-promoted and over-priced, but they are likely better product than the TV. If you have an iPod or iAnything that can dock on the sound system, that would be IMO the most useful of the 3.

Since when is music a distraction?? Some people, like myself, actually work better with some background noise.

I’d get the TV. It’ll be useful to you when you move off-campus too.

Um, those TV brands are pretty name brand if you ask me.

Don’t get speakers to listen to music if you’re going to be in a dorm, a lot of people will be annoyed at you, and it’s bose anyway so it’s only about a $50 value for the quality you’d be getting. That alarm clock is an even bigger waste of money.
So get the TV. Even though it’s a crappy TV, you will have more use for it than the other 2 options.

No these are free and they re not discontinued or part of a promotion… My dad has been workin in a company for oer 10 years so as a gift they let him choose any thing on what i mentioned… And since my bday was coming up he let me choose something that i want. Free everthing no shipping/tax/anything else 100% free

My arguement is that i think im going to end up purchasing a tv and a stereo for my dorm room bc ill need to listen to some music once in a while while studying and alot during the summer bc im going to psu for their summer program as a freshman… And ill also need a tv if i get bored i coul play xbox on the tv… So no bose alarm clock

Honestly a stereo seems like a waste of money. A lot of people hate when others blast music. You’re going to end up wearing headphones most of the time.

You can play your xbox through your laptop by a $20 fix, not the best quality but it’s decent. (s-video for xbox + easycap recorder)

I’d personally go with the tv anyways because it’s the most expensive, but they’re quite big for a dorm room and would take up a lot of space. If you listen to music w/o headphones most likely someone will dislike it. I’d leave whatever you choose in the end at home, neither options seem too great in a dorm room.

FYI, every study shows if music is on while studying, you do worse.

Doesn’t take a serious audiophile to know that Bose is a scam. But that’s exactly why you should get it. You are NOT going to use the TV, I can guarantee you that betting on my life and my 300 acres of land in TN. Get the Bose Wave Radio II which is the more expensive of the Bose and sell it off on ebay. Now that you have cash, you can buy truly useful things or just save it up like a good college student.

Get the TV. I promise you that you will use it. If you are social, people will come to your room to play video games or watch the game or something. If you aren’t… at least you have something to do in your room all by yourself.

32" isn’t that big either. I connect my TV to my computer so I can watch a show while I’m drawing/working on stuff (I used to be art/cinema student)

Don’t get the TV, you won’t be spending a lot of time watching it anyway, free time is scarce. You don’t need a clock radio either, you can use your cell phone as an alarm. Get the sound system, people won’t get annoyed at you as long as you don’t play it on max volume all the time.

Get the TV. You will definitely find time to watch it. The TV room in my dorm frequently had people in it and everyone I knew that had a TV used it. You probably ain’t find time to watch all of Titanic in one sitting but it’s nice to decompress and watch a bit of TV sometimes. You can listen to music on your computer.
My suitemate majored in engineering and always found time to watch iCarly or Big Time Rush or Spongebob.

I think ots now between the tv and sound system…

I have a quesrtion aboit the tv though… How do you connect to cable? Is it just a montly cable service? Do u go through the school for cable? How much i it?-at penn st? And is it worth paying for cable if i were to get a tv- bc i can just play video game if i want

Cable and other utilities are already factored into your cost of living there. You don’t have to pay extra.

^^Unless the school offers a “premium” package you can opt to get.

You just plug it in to the port that’s on the wall and you’ve got your cable. I preferred watching things on Hulu and Netflix to the cable package offered at my school. You can get a VGA or HDMI cable and connect your computer to the television.

Bump…

Honestly? Make up your mind, haha!

I’d get the TV. I definitely use mine plenty. There is plenty of free time, I don’t know why people are saying there isn’t. I’m involved in things outside classes and I still have plenty of free time.
