TVs in dorms...

I got it last week at Circuit City. You can check but my guess is the sale ended today.

what kind of channels do you get with a tuner? local channels only or cable too?

UCLA provides each dorm room with a cable tv connection, right? (this is for those who choose to bring TVs)

Yes, each dorm room has two cable TV jacks and a TV tuner should get you basic cable and some specialty channels (History Channel, Cartoon Network, etc.) just like a normal TV would. It worked that way for my freshman-year roommate and he didn't have to pay anything for it.

a tv tuner will get you every channel that UCLA provides.

^ here is the channel line-up
You'll get all of these

the only ones you have to pay for (if you want them) are the HBO channels.

but back to the original question, how would one set up a cable tv in a dorm room? i'm pretty technologically-challenged...

plug TV into a power outlet, take a coaxial cable (just a normal TV antenna cable), plug one end into the jack on the wall, the other end to the jack on the TV, turn on TV, tune to desired channel using remote, sit back, and enjoy. :D

Ah, yes. Thank you... =D

LOL!

We need our own coaxial cable?

yes

I'm a little confused. If the laptop has an available PCI slot, is it still better to use a usb2 tv tuner? The PCI ones seem to be less expensive.

I think a PCI card would work better, but the USB2 one does not seem to be having any problems for me.

Something I've notced about the USB one I have, the quality is not wonderful. However I'm still not sure if that is because the device has problems, or because the cable here has exceptionally poor quality.

wow we need our own coaxial cable? that sux. im thinking about getting a USB2 tv tuner. i heard Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2 is gooood.

and wow thats a lot of channels.

haha a coax cable is like $2 - its not an unreasonable expectation for you to have your own :)

I'd be surprised if your TV tuner didn't come with a coaxial cable included in the box.

where do you even put a tv in a triple room? as far as i saw during orientation, there's no dresser or anything convenient to put a tv on. in fact the rooms so small im not even sure where to put a fridge!

most people put the microfrige under the window between the two desks, and a tv on top of the frige. But you're right, there aren't too many options with a triple.

thats very comforting to know.
