Im gonna be a freshman next year and will have a single room(norm at my school). Would you recommend having a TV in my room? Cable isnt provided so I would have to pay for it.

Well if love to watch tv like I do then yes. If you plan to be a television producer like I do, then yes. Basically if you can afford cable than get that too. This question is more of a personal preference. TV is a big thing for me so yeah I would get it. But if you barely watch it then don’t bother. If you want to watch a little every now and then, ask if you can chill in a room of one of your friends occassionally.

I would say no. Cable was free at my dorm and I almost never used it. Neither did most others (some did for sports). Any big shows that lots of people liked was usually watched in the common area. A lot did have a tv for video games though.

Wow, that sucks. Cable is free at pretty much all schools.

What college do you go to that charges for cable?
We got cable free and about 8 channels or so worth of HBO and Shotime.

If you can afford it and think you’ll watch it a lot, then get it. But remember, there are a lot of free websites where you can watch most tv shows, like Hulu.

If you don’t want to lose the space a TV takes up you can always get a TV-in card for your computer. It won’t be in the way if you don’t use it, but if you want 20 minutes of distraction it’s just one click away.

I used to looove tv, so I brought it to my dorm. I thought it would be good because I brought some video games too. It turned out that I really didn’t need it. The video games were a pain to set up and take down so I didn’t bother.

In reality, the computer is all you need if you want to be entertained - youtube, downloading movies and shows, and the internet in general are all good substitutes.

don’t even bother, seriously

Why dont even bother?

i have 60 channels free that sucks, now tv for me is a stress reliever i do my hw with the tv on in the background

I don’t watch much TV outside of cable news, but I’m going to be bringing a small TV, as cable is provided. If it turns out I don’t need it, I can always take it home one weekend (school is ~2 hours away).

i’m bringing a small one.

all of you who are saying cable is free, it is just built into your housing price.

You’re in a single. There is no easier way to make friends as a male than to come in with a 45’’ TV and an XBox, Wii, and PS3.

Realistically, though, you don’t need a TV, but it’s nice to have. Every college is different and every dorm is different. What works for some people on CC might not work for you in your dorm. If you have video games, love watching movies, or have some TV shows that you can’t miss, get a TV. If you don’t watch much TV to begin with, you can always catch your shows in a common room or in a friend’s room. If you want to be the room everyone goes to though, it helps to have a huge TV and invite everyone over to watch Lost or the Office or whatever else kids watch these days.

If you’re not into video games, a TV is unnecessary. You can watch television on your computers if your campus provides free local and popular stations.

Im going to the university of toronto, and like somebody said I think the fee for cable isnt worked into the housing fees like at other schools. I dont even watch that much tv at home, the only thing I really watch is sports, and I dont play video games. Besides sports, the only reason I want a tv is to have something on in the background when Im working or about to go to sleep. But I cant decide if thats worth 30 bucks a month.

If you wanna watch something without having to pay for it, you can just watch it on your laptop.

I just wanna know what school you go to where singles are the norm for freshmen…SO jealous.

I wish I had a TV for Sundays…I miss NFL Sunday Ticket at home :(. Plus my dorm internet is REALLY slow so any type of streaming is very choppy, and it takes ages to load an episode of a show from Hulu

I dont even watch tv anymore. Its kind of boring. You can do everything else on your computer and its free. Especially since most college kids are poor. If you get a tv, then someone might steal it or break it.
