TV's, Refrigerators, Cell Phone

Ok, so I am going to live in Southgate and I was wondering how double rooms are set up. At my boarding school there was a small common room that attached to two seperate bedrooms which allowed for some privacy. Is this the set up at Duke (specifically Southgate), or is it two beds to a single room???????

Also, how big of a tv should I bring. I want to save space so I was thinking a 15" flat screen, but for the same price I could also buy a 20" "normal" tv, with the larger backside. Which one would be better?

Are refrigerators recommended?

And finally, which has the best reception at Duke, cingular or verizon????

Thankssssss.

Hahaha. It's 2 beds to a single room. I can't imagine how you think Duke would be able to house 1600+ incoming freshman students on East if every student got his/her own bedroom and a two-person common room.

Can't really help with the TV stuff because I didn't have one, but I'd suggest not going too fancy...seriously, I didn't know anyone with "flat-screens" or whatever, just normal, little, dorm-room-appropriate TVs. Keep in mind that even though Southgate isn't one of the smaller dorm rooms, you ARE sharing a space with another person, so don't bring a TV that'll take up too much room.

Yes, you should bring a fridge, because you will definitely use it. Basically everyone I know had one, and the ones who didn't either got one halfway through the year or really regretted it.

Verizon. I have Cingular, and it sucks.

Talk with your roommate about a TV... my roommate brought a 20'' "regular" TV last year, and that worked out just fine. If you would prefer to have a 15" flat screen, then by all means get that... there was a kid in my dorm who had one and mounted it to the wall in his room. He also had a single, and on the first day of school his parents hired people to install shag carpeting in his room.

Definitely on the fridge. I had one before going to school, but my parents couldn't fit it in the car when they came down (I was already at Duke doing pBUILD). They ended up just buying me a new fridge... and ironically it was the same one that my roommate had.

I agree with Verizon. I have it and have never felt disappointed in it.

Too bad about the room. I went to a boarding school in New England with over 1000 kids, and they did have the two bedrooms and a common room thing for the doubles. I can't imagine how it's going to be like in the same room with somebody.

Oh please. I'm an only child who had never shared a room with anyone in my life and I had no trouble to adjusting to living with a roommate in a tiny cell-block like room. It's not a big deal.

Um...you'll get over it. Welcome to college, where you're not going to be spoiled like you might have been at your New England boarding school. Sorry if I now sound rude, but this post just rubbed me the wrong way.

Wow. It was honestly just a question, not intended to offend anyone. Is everyone at Duke this defensive?

Wow, you're doing a great job of endearing yourself to your future classmates. Keep it up.

You're in for a bit of a reality check, I believe. Not everyone at Duke is "defensive," but most people also aren't surprised at the idea of having to share a room with a roommate. I don't know how you meant to phrase your question, and I'm sure it was just a naive inquiry since the situation is not what you're used to, but the way that you said it made you come across as incredibly spoiled. Just saying.

EDIT: Yeah, and word to banana...pretty much.

Your memories of the "shock" of having to live in the same room with someone will probably be the type of stuff that you will laugh about later in life. I would keep what bandcampgirl said in mind and be careful about how you phrase things - there will be people at Duke used to the lifestyle you've led so far, but to others, comments about how Duke doesn't live up to the standards of your New England boarding school will not cast you in a very good light. Just be aware of that.

I'll make sure to watch my mouth I guess.

Ouch, one plus about SG is that chances are your double won't be that small! So that's good.

As for the TV situation, I'd personally get the 15'' flat screen because it takes up less space (and the image quality is probably better lol). Both years, a 20" with a big back wouldn't have really fit in the rooms what with our massive accumulation of stuff. I have a 15" flat screen and its fit really well and stuff.... it serves its purpose, I love it.

Refrigerators are strongly recommended.

Verizon is the best on campus.

how is Sprint?

i was at duke and i didnt even check my cell phone, i'm not exactly the brighest bulb

S1 had Sprint (we all did) this past year--it wasn't good. Our Sprint plan just ran out, so we have switched to Verizon--which he heard was one of the best to use around campus.

He found the 2.3 cu. ft. (I think that's the size) refrigerator to be completely adequate, and they had a microwave sitting on top of it. It was great to have both. They had a regular 26 in. tv on top of one of the dressers.

I actully have Sprint and I've been pretty happy with it at Duke. It didn't work in one spot in my dorm, but my roommate Verizon didn't either. Other than that the only dead spots I had were the BC and the library, like most others.

I will say Verizon is the best, but Sprint has always been the best choice for me, and I've had no problems.
