Do a lot of people bring TVs in their dorms? what size flat screen is recommended?

Almost everyone, but most people can’t afford flat screens you rich ■■■■■■■.

They actually don’t sell tubes in stores now… besides, I just bought a 19" Sharp LCD for $200. I was going to buy a cheap tube on craigslist but wasn’t sure how reliable the sellers were. Plus, $200 isn’t bad when you consider you’re gonna use it for at least 4 years, which means $50/yr. Not too bad.

This may sound ridiculous, but since the room furnishings seem pretty sparse, where do you put the tv? My D and her roommate want one, but are reluctant to get one yet until they see the room.

okay - my roommate is bringing his 32" tv… is there going to be room for this / a dresser or something that it can be set on (if it makes a difference we’re in haskell)?

is it just… too big? o.0

^Haskell doesn’t have dressers. You’re gonna want to get a stand for it and put it by the window or you can put it in the common room if you wanna share it with the rest of the suitemates.

No, stny, I had the exact same worry. What if there’s nowhere to put the TV…?

^, I know you’ve seen our room (sorry it was messy haha) but if you have an LCD, you can put it on your desk or you can get like a small nightstand shelf thing to put it on. I don’t think a 19" would take up a lot of room so you’ll be fine. :)

…yeah stores only sell flat screens now.
a 19 in. sounds good though

Oh man…I’m sorry to be the bummer voice here but I can’t believe there are that many tv’s in college! Isn’t there a tv in the lounge room of every dorm? Does most every room really have/need it’s own? Also, what about watching media-less dvd’s on your laptop? We de-emphasized tv in our home…and it wasn’t a habit to watch on school nights in particular. I’m sure like everything else it will be up to the student…but it seems somewhat disappointing there are so many tvs! Tufts has film/movie watching which seems like alot of fun…and more social!

sorry i didn’t know it was so offensive to watch tv occasionally. i won’t put a tv in my room just because of that post, eye53 - thanks for slapping some sense into me.

I agree with eyes53… I expect watching TV occassionally in the lounge with others will be a lot more fun… go Conan… not to mention that there are much more fun things to do on campus…
But yeah…if everyone sticks to their room TVs, I’m gonna get one too…

I was considering getting a TV last year, but after surviving a whole semester–wait, scratch that–YEAR without one, I’ve eventually grown used to not watching TV at all. I can always catch my favorite shows online, anyways.

I have the best of both worlds… I have a 21" LCD screen as my primary monitor for my desktop computer and a TV tuner I installed into the computer so that I can plug in cable or video games and watch it through my computer on the screen.

Son is a Tufts grad. He was in Tilton his freshman year, Haskell his sophomore year, and off campus apartment his next two. He had a TV every year. As I recall, Tufts provides you with great cable in your room. As for common room TV, in Tilton there was one on the first floor for the building and I never saw one in Haskell. Things may have changed, but that is what they were during my son’s years.
