Tweed to Yale

What's the cheapest and most efficient way to get to Yale from the New Haven airport? I'm arriving in the morning, 31st of August.

Thanks.

The local bus would cost you about 2 dollars while a taxi which is significantly more convenient will cost you about 15-17 dollars.

How often does the bus run? and will it allow large amounts of luggage? (probably 2 big luggage cases).

I don't see why the bus will restrict the amount of luggage. I believe the bus goes to the airport only several times a day instead of making hourly stops. You could call Tweed to see if they have more information.

The bus probably runs about every 20-40 minutes from Tweed (or a very nearby intersection) and it's less than 2 dollars. You can ask at the airport when you arrive. It goes directly to downtown New Haven. A taxi would obviously be faster, and probably only cost 10-15 bucks.

This "downtown New Haven" area the bus would drop you off at is within walking distance of Yale?

Yes, a block or two from the center of campus.

Virtuoso--In the future you might want to check into flying into Hartford. From many destinations the flights are cheaper and more convenient than flying into New Haven. There is a limo service from Bradley (the Hartford airport) than drops you off on campus. Yale students get discounted fares.

^We get discounted fares? On the plane or the shuttle?

I got the tickets into Tweed for $198 one-way, and the bus would be only a few dollars. On the other hand, even if flying into Hartford would be cheaper, the shuttle to campus would negate the cheaper cost of tickets.

What would be a good deal from CA to Yale, including plane tickets and shuttle/bus fares?

pagEL - you will probably meet other yalies on the plane or at Tweed & could share a taxi ride w/ them. then you can be dropped off at Phelps Gate... assuming you're a frosh. suggestion: where some kind of YALE item cuz other Yalies will notice & an upperclassman will no doubt help you! $198.00 is pretty good.. are you flying delta?

"What would be a good deal from CA to Yale, including plane tickets and shuttle/bus fares?"

I am not sure about from CA, but Southwest Airlines has some great fares in general and if you sign up for their "Ding" fare program, you can get some fantastic specials. As an example, right now (or at least until 2:00 p.m. Central time today) you could get a one way ticket from Chicago to Hartford for $54 plus tax. The one way shuttle on Connecticut Limo from the Hartford Airport to Phelps Gate on Yale campus is $23.75 if you book on line.

In our experience, we have found that the fares to Hartford are over all less expensive, provide more options and generally more convenient with the shuttle service.

Flying into LaGuardia in New York City is also an option and there are usually good fares. Shuttle service is also available, but it is more expensive.

Dad from Santa Barbara here. Cheapest way to Yale needs to include the convenience factor. If you are close to a large airport (LA or SF), you eliminate one leg of travel. In that case NYC with train to New Haven is least expensive. Take the subway first then the train. I check the websites linked to Yale travel for all the details. Flying from West to East creates it's own potential anxiety if you're not familiar with NYC. You'll find your ground transportation is accomplished at night which may be intimidating...mainly for your parents! Otherwise Hartford has excellent connections from Dallas (AA) and the limo service is inexpensive as previously reported. Don't forget that this option negates the need for a taxi from the train station in New Haven (a good idea with luggage at night, about $5). Tweed is the smoothest if you can get your flight times right. US Air connects you from Philadelphia. The total flight time seems longer but you must subtract the otherwise necessary train/shuttle time. The final transportation cost after compring NYC, Hartford and Tweed has been within $50 of each other. This past year has been my Daughter's first year at Yale so I have tried multiple options. The time of year will make one option more advantageous than the other. I have just learned of a possible price break for students. Book through STA, a student travel service, and you can get greater discounts with your student status. As you price your flight they ask if you are a student or not. I've checked both ways. The non student rate is similar to those found on Orbitz while the student rate is significantly lower. I haven't booked a flight that way yet but it will be my first choice this Thanksgiving. Good luck and congratulations on being in the position to have these concerns.

$80 Roundtrip from JFK/LGA Airports to Phelps Gates if you book online
Their big coach buses can hold you large luggage

If you fly into LaGuardia, you can also take a bus into Manhattan to Grand Central and take the Metro North out to New Haven, which is the last stop. I don't know how much the bus costs, but the train is $14 one way, off-peak.

The city bus only costs about a dollar and ten cents(at least thats what I paid the last time I was on it). I would not bring too much luggage though.

I would also strongly recommend that people use Bradley (Hartford/Springfield) in the future rather than Tweed or the NYC airports. Tweed is more expensive because of their limited service, and the NYC airports are notorious for their delays and other inconveniences. They're also a bit farther time-wise than Bradley. As others have said, there is shuttle service from Bradley, so the cost is not very high at all. If you are an inexperienced traveller, you can't beat the convenience of simply taking a shuttle and not having to worry about the bus, subway, or Metro-North.

And I would not bring luggage onto the city buses. There is little room and it'll be a hassle for you to manage them.

I actually found the tickets to Tweed for the same prices as going to Hartford. I thought going to Tweed would be more convenient since they were the same price.

Perhaps because of the number of connections she needed to make and the fact that she needed to take a taxi because of her luggage, my daughter thought Tweed was less convenient. She prefers Hartford.

I have over time found consistently better fares to Hartford than to Tweed, but it probably depends on where you are flying from.

Like at some other smaller airports, prices there have fallen dramatically in the past year or two.

Good to know they're falling. I tried to book a flight out of there in May and found a $380-something fare with two stops versus a $143 round-trip with one layover out of Bradley. For those prices, you may as well drive to the Philadelphia airport and just fly out of there. :p Most people who live in the New Haven area use Bradley. I think that says something.
