Twin Beds

How comfy are the twin xl beds? Do I need to buy a foam mattress pad to make it comfier? Also give me some thread counts on the sheets to buy please! Thanks!

You can find value packs consisting of XLtwin bed sheets, mattress pad, and comforter at [Offering XL twin sheets, college dorm bedding, dorm linens, storage, bath essentials](<a href=“Namecheap Education Program: Free Domains for Students”>Namecheap Education Program: Free Domains for Students)

It depends on your preference. I had trouble sleeping on the bed during orientation so I bought a foam pad for the school year. All of my friends and guests commented on how soft my bed was. So yea, buy one if you want from costco or target. And LOL to the tread count… really trivial but I believe that the higher the tread count, the smoother the sheet will be.

I’d like to suggest not buying from the website listed above. I heard that the quality is kind of bad, and the company that sends the info our for it isn’t actually affiliated with UCLA.

Refer to this thread –

I got that catalogue in the mail and I’m so glad I didn’t actually purchase anything from them. After searching around the web, it definitely seems like a scam and that the quality of the products is garbage. Save yourself the money and go get some quality linen from somewhere else, I got some really nice tommy hilfiger sheets and everything else I need at macy’s that I’m sure they will last for a long time.

do NOT buy from that website. bed bath and beyond ftw. or even target/walmart etc.

Yeah, don’t buy from that website. My roommate last year actually bought her sheets from there and they were very poor in quality, ugly, and the sheets were very thin. I got my sheets from Target, and they were much cheaper and far better.

Wow, thanks for the warning! We received the catalog from UCLA who highly recommended this website and my mom has been thinking aboout ordering. As a matter of fact, the only reason she has not done it yet is that she has doubt about the quality. I am so glad i mentioned it here and i appreciate everybody’s inputs. Can you get extra long sheets and mattress pads at target?

dtn521, are parents allowed to go up to the room with the student during check-in at orientation because my mom would like to see what the room looks like.

I don’t think they allow that as check in is very busy with hundreds of kids checking in, finding their groups, etc. And my daughter would have been mortified if I had done that! She didn’t want me any where near her! And the room you are in for orienation is not the same room you will live in so it hardy would matter. If your parents are taking part in the family orintation they they will be there for the third day of orientation. I think we had a tour of the dorms as part of the parent orientation. If they are not attending orientation they can still arrange to do a housing tour as those are offered all the time.

im pretty sure you can go in and look because once they check you in all you need is your bruincard to get in and out the building, i doubt they’ll stop you, but as Inquiringmind2 said you can also check it out on the third day if you are going to parents orientation…

as for the bed, im an easy sleeper so i didn’t need any paddings at all but its much nicer with one as one of my friend had 2 layers of foam on her bed and i loved taking naps on it lol… as for where to buy sheets you can also wait a bit, around august there will be “college” sale at major stores that’ll have a lot of college related items such as the twin xl sheets

Or you could do what my roommate did after coming back from Winter break: no sheets, no blanket, just a pillow and a big unpacked suitcase at the end of the bed. I can’t believe he was able to sleep like that for a month.

Thank you all for the replies! Inquiringmind2, you attended family orientation, so was it worth $60? My parents are reluctant about it because it would cost $120 for both of them. Plus they would have to be on campus at 7:30 am. Did you feel like you knew more about UCLA and its academics after orientation?

to sheep55: yes your parents can go with you to see the room. one of my roommates for orientation last year had his parents come up with him to see the room. check-in wasn’t really busy for me last year, but check-out was hectic! take the stairs when you check-out

its not from ucla. they pay ucla to be able to slap on ucla’s name and logo and to get the mailing list. p.o.s. products. stay away

$8.99 xl long twin sheet sets @ ross oh yes!

sheep55: Sorry to take so long to reply. My husband and I really enjoyed parent orientation. I had a few concerns about my daughter attending such a huge school. We learned a lot at orientation and many of the things we learned put my mind at ease. I enjoyed the presentatons and talking to other parents. You don’t really have to be there at 7:30am. 8:00 would be fine. They just say that to spread out all the check in. We checked in, had coffee and stood around for a bit before it began so 8:00 or 8:15 would be fine. My older D goes to a small LAC with less than 2000 so we want to do all we can to feel a bit connected to UCLA. If your parents can afford it I would recommend that they go.

Thanks inquiring mind2! After seriously thinking about it,my mom has decided to sign up for the family orientation but my dad will not, just to save $60. Like you, my mom is hoping that by attending the orientation, she will know more about UCLA and its academics and, consequently be more connected with what i will be experiencing. She also looks forward to talking to other parents.
