Hey, I'm a twin. Yeah, it's pretty great, except he beats me up. I am stronger than him academically... a lot stronger. (33 ACT vs. 28, ranked 1st in class vs. 14 outta 92) Since we are both applying to Duke, will him being my twin help him get in or hurt me getting in?

I don't think the fact that you have a twin who's applying will affect either one of you since the admissions office evaluates candidates individually based on merit, personality, blah, blah, blah (insert admissions speel). So, don't worry about it.

Here's a chronicle article about that: Seeing double, admissions office weighs merits of twins

I don't know how that will affect you, but we have triplets at Duke.

I know two sets of twins in the freshmen class right now.

There was a question on the Duke Supplement it went kinda like this:

Do you have brothers/sisters applying to Duke? Yes/No
Are you a twin/triplet? Yes/No

if anything it might help your brother..i really dont think it will hurt you. and if it does im sorry that sucks.

My twin and I are applying too...

I am academically a bit stronger. But unfortunately we have similar EC's, etc. so I don't know how it will play out.

Yeah, virtuoso has better scores on SATs and stuff. damn him. But we have similar ECs, though I was a page in DC, which might help on the ECs section. And apparently he has more posts on CC.

I was very close to my twin, but we both thought it was time to seperate. I especially did not want to go to the same school. I think being a twin is somewhat helpful, similiar to Northwestern, but even if only one of you gets in to Duke, it will all work out for the best.

He's at MIT and Im at Duke. We both love it, and I think it has been much better for both of us being at different schools.

I hope this information is helpful. My twin sons were admitted ED to Pratt this December. The boys attended a seminar offerred by several top schools including Duke and were told that Duke appreciates the strong bond between twins and if the applicants are of equal strength ( their GPA's are 1/100 pt apart, and SATs are 10 points apart), they would probably be treated the same - either both accepted or both rejected. Thank goodness, they both were accepted. I can't remember a better winter break than this one.

Nice! Congrats - looking forward to meeting them next Fall. Are they identical? 'cause I might start a policy that one half of identical twin pairs has to wear a funny hat or something :-D

Yes. As a matter of fact, one of them broke his nose when he was about 4, so we were able to tell them apart. He broke it again during football this fall and had to have surgery. Now, even I am having a hard time telling them apart.

They are planning to attend one of the Pratt Blue Devil Days this spring, hopefully they will meet you then.

1/100 GPA apart and 10 points apart on the SAT?

My twin has like a 110 point difference on the SAT (but almost the same GPA). I guess only one of us or neither are going to get accepted.

Stay positive! If each of your test scores are within Duke's profile, or even if they are not, but other aspects of your applications are strong, you have a good chance.
From what I have seen (and this has been my first and hopefully last experience with college admissions, other than my own), Duke takes a holistic approach to the admission process. The school tries to build a community and from my few times on the campus, the Office of Admissions has been very successful.

I hope that DukeEgr93 agrees.

Jfitz, it sounds like you have a good shot based on scores alone but I doubt your brother will get into Duke based on statistics alone.

You know, I'm in a similar situation in that I'm an identical twin, my twin's stats and mine are similar though... (we're both applying to Pratt RD this year.)

k_twin - which one of you gets the hat?

Would a 2110 SAT and 3.89 GPA be within Duke's range? I would guess it is in the lower part of the lower low.

proudinnj~welcome to the Pratt family!!!!!! Great school of engineering--S1 loves it!! And your twins will love having Dr. G (DukeEng93)!

BTW, the little restaurant/snack bar in one of the new engineering buildings is called "Twinnies" (actually named after Dean Johnson's mother!!), so twins are held in high regard there!!
