I’m a junior taking an AP Microeconomics class online since I’m at a new school and they didn’t have any social science classes I could take. Anyway, I messed up the dates and ended up missing my final exam, which caused me to get a B in the class. Should I not even report this class to my school and take two history classes this semester (AP Macro and AP Gov) and try to get A’s in them? I also got a B in College English, but other than that I got all A’s. I’m trying to get into schools like Notre Dame and USC. How will colleges look at having 2 B’s in my junior year? Especially since I got straight A’s last year?
If you have the option to not report the online course, I would advise doing that.
If you go to a brick & mortar school and they allowed you to take an online course, they may expect you to have that credit/grade. But even if so, they probably don’t intend to include it in your GPA.
{I’m not a big fan of being required to report wrk that is done that goes above and beyond expectations when students end up doing poorly in those classes. I think students should be encouraged to take academic risks and “go for it” but not be punished if additional classes end up biting them. So I have no problem with your omitting them if possible. I’d be upfront and talk to the GC about it tho. } Yet, you should be straight forward and honest regarding the grades if required to report.
Yet there is another issue. You do have two B’s in 2 classes, only one of which was due to a glitch (and why did that happen?). Yet you are aiming for at least 2 schools that are among the top 20 schools in the country. Does your overall record suggest that you are among the top 5% of students in your state in terms of grades and other achievements? Do you stand out as exceptional in some way (that is recognized by others) , in terms of your skill in a EC or in terms of your academic prowess or awards won? If someone who knows all the students in your current school were to be asked for a few names of the very top students (not GPA but in terms of their ability to think, their knowledge of the world, their exceptional skills in one or more topics/activities, etc) would your name be among those the person listed? If not, why focus on just the top 20 schools?
