Two choices

William and Mary fans, I'd like to see your views on this. Until today, I was fairly certain that I was going to go to UMich, since I didn't think I was actually going to get into William and Mary. Somehow, I did, and the letter came today. I am from the Chicago area, and am not entirely sure what to think now. What should be some factors I should be considering for a potential Poli Sci major (Am I not the picture of generic?) where money is not a problem?

i know nothing about umich other than that they have exceptional athletics and enthusiastic support of those athletic teams by students. well i guess i also know,in general, it is a school whose academics are held in high regard (although exactly how high a regard i am not sure).
i know w&m is an excellent choice for academics although its' athletic teams are not very strong and support of those teams is rather tepid. i also know w&m has a beautiful and historic campus and i like the part of the country where it is located.
these schools do not really seem that similar to me. the climates they are located in are very different and the size of these schools are miles apart.i guess the thing they have in common is strong academics.

Very true, they are very different, I suppose the question is more academically as opposed to actual campus climates or atmospheres. For instance, which school would have a better poli sci program would be my major interest right now. Polls and numbers are worthless in comparison to actual experiences.

SocSkiBlue...go to the other post "reasons to attend W&M" and read what I wrote (just putting my 5 cents in there) hope it helps.

Ah thanks much.

I don't know if W&M has a poli sci major. The Government and International Relations / International Studies departments are strong though. (Model UN won the world championships again this year, so someone is doing something right)

I think poli-sci and government are fairly interchangeable terms, a government major from WM would be pretty much a poli-sci degree at another school. I don't know about umich but I do know government is very strong at wm.

I don't know much about UMich although it perhaps is better recognized across the country than Wm & Mary. If class size matters to you, I would wonder about UM class size, particularly Freshman and Sophmore years, as it has over 25,000 students. I think the personal attention would be better at Wm & Mary. My understanding about the government and history departments is that they are very strong at Wm & Mary and certainly the climate is more appealing. But, playing the devil's advocate, I went to a large state school and would never have discovered or found my major at a small liberal arts type campus. They really are very different schools - have you considered an overnight?

Ah yeah, I considered it, but I think I realized that Michigan is the right place for me. Thanks for your help anyways.
