Like most other incoming freshmen, I am blessed with the difficult choice of finding the correct laptop to purchase. I feel like I have done enough research to figure that the two computers below are efficient for my needs (No gaming at all, just regular use such as music, watching videos, internet browsing, word processing and so on), but if anyone else has any other recommendations then please say so.

Anyways, if anyone could help me out with picking one outta these two, or a completely different one, THANKS!! Also regarding price range, these two are probably the most I'd be willing to spend.

Personally, I dislike Vaio computers. They’re extremely delicate and prone to many problems. If you’re not looking at gaming, then perhaps check out netbooks or ultra-portable laptops. I have a Lenovo U160 that I bought for less than the price of these two computers but it still has amazing specs for its small, netbook size.

I was actually seriously considering a netbook since it provides the essentials to what I need, but after some close friends strongly recommended against them for various reasons I decided against them. I’m looking for a laptop to last me all four years.

I vote for the Toshiba. 13 incher with 8 hr battery sounds good. It got good reviews too.

The vaio has low battery life. It’s lower than advertised. You’ll probably get about 4 hours but the Toshiba has twice that.

I remember trying out that Toshiba at Best Buy when I was searching for my comp. Light and solid. It has a nice rubber feel instead of those glossy plastic cases.

Good to know Style, my Best Buy hasn’t gotten it in yet so I haven’t been able to get any first-hand experience with it. Which I feel like it is a must, when buying a PC, TV, or any game systems.

Whatever you do buy, please consider whether the credit card it’s purchased with will give you an extra year of extended warranty. That has been great for us, as both our kids have their laptops die on them. They got full refunds from the CC extended warranty & then bought netbooks because they’re so light & transportable. Would DEFINITELY suggest that you strongly consider a netbook and possibly a desktop. It might be a cheaper and lighter combo than just having the laptop.

Also like buying from Costco whenever possible, since you have 90-days no hassle return if there are any problems & a 2 year warranty (most times–check details before purchasing).

Son had a bad time with his Sony & now is having a tough time with HP. He would not recommend either brand. D had a hard time with her HP as well–basically it melted down, frying all her data too so it couldn’t be retrieved. Don’t know anything about Toshiba.

A friend has that Toshiba. It is super light & beautiful & I want it so bad. Actually, we liked it so much that one of my other friends already went out to buy hers!

Just between those two, Toshiba Protege series is supposed to be a very good line of laptops.
The top two most reliable laptop brands are usually Toshiba and Asus.

Toshiba is better, and considering weight and portability, toshiba is definitely a better option than vaio, toshina weighs about 3 lbs, and vaio at 5 lbs.
an added bonus of the toshiba is the USB 3.0 which is nice to have.
also we take into consideration its battery life… obviosly toshiba wins here again! 9 hours over vaio’s 5 hours.
