two deposits at once?

so i sent in my css profile waaaay late (as in, yesterday) because i didn't know we had to send it for GW. anyway, they said they would review it and give me aid, but they won't be able to send me notification of my package until after matriculation date (which is may 1, right?).

my question is, should i send in two deposits at one time by may 1; one to GW, one to umcp (where i would go if gw doesn't give me enough money) so i know i'll be able to go to college SOMEWHERE? so if i get enough money from gw, i can cancel my enrollment at umcp or vice versa if finaid doesn't work out for gw? is that even allowed if you're not a waitlisted student? and is it worth it to risk losing the $800 deposit for gw if they're not gonna have enough money by the end anyway?

help please, i'm so stressed out by this

I would definitely send in both deposits, because you have no idea how much GW will give you. You can definitely cancel your admission to either school after may 1st, you just won't get your deposit. And if GW doesn't give you enough money, I'm sure 800 bucks wasted is much less than what you'd have to pay to attend there otherwise.

I know waitlisted students are allowed to send one deposit and cancel it later if they get accepted to the other school, but if I'm just regular decision, am I (legally) allowed to do that?

Ask GW for an extension on your deposit pending receipt of your aid package. They may allow it. Then you don't risk losing two deposits, and you don't double-deposit.

Technically, it's considered unethical to double deposit.

"Such a decision can have ramifications for your own offer of admission, too. Double depositing is severely frowned upon by all colleges and universities, and institutions can and do share information and lists. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that students and their families who choose to send in multiple deposits may in fact lose their spaces at all of their schools. Several highly-selective schools, such as Columbia and Stanford, have added a clause to their offers of admission stating that their decision is conditional upon the student's accepting admission to one college only."

so if I convince them to give me an extension, then do I still send in a deposit for my backup and then cancel it if GW gets back to me? Or does that still count as double depositing (and I know double-depositing is a really bad idea).
If I don't send in any deposits until I get info from GW, and I find out that I won't be able to attend, then I would still have no choice but to go to GW, right? Since May 1 is the deadline for umcp
