Basically, I struggled a lot with my mental health my first semester senior year, but that is no excuse.
I had a terrible math teacher (precalc honors) and ended with a D. I plan on dropping the class, and I know that is taking the easy way out but I don’t trust myself to take another semester of it, because I know I will not pass. I tried my very hardest in this class, and still ended with a D. I already have all my math credits needed.
I am taking AP Physics 2, and also ended up having a D. It’s pretty obvious that this is a tough class, but I plan on still taking it next semester because I know I can get a better grade.
I applied to:
- UCSB
- UCSD
- UCR
- UCSC
- SFSU (been accepted already)
- SDSU
- LONG BEACH
- CHICO
- SJSU
- UOP (accepted)
Should I email the admission offices and let them know about my grades, and how much do you think this will effect my chances. I’m assuming I will not be accepted to an UCs, because of the no Ds or Fs policy, but what about the state schools?
please be nice im sensitive ):
So sorry that you are going through a difficult time. You are correct that the UC’s will have an issue with the D’s but so will the impacted campuses such as SDSU, CSULB and SJSU. They have more qualified applicants than spots available. One D might be overlooked, but 2 is going to be hard to justify.
I would get your counselor involved in contacting the schools. Do you have medical documentation for your health issues? Are you seeing a therapist and have they given you the green light that all is well? Mental health issues are a slippery slope for colleges since they to make sure you are up to the task of succeeding in a rigorous environment.
Have you considered a Gap year to give yourself some time to heal mentally?
I would also like to add that you should contact the 2 schools where you have been accepted first and find out how you can maintain your provisional admission at this point.
Please update with your plan and best of luck.
I am about to start an online course, to in a sense ¨replace¨ my D from my first semester of Precalc, and I have officially dropped it. Which I hope will help my case.
I have always struggled with anxiety, but with application season, school itself, it just happened to get worse. Which is why my therapist has never suggested for me to take on the challenge of college. I have worked hard for years, even all the way back to middle school, in hopes to go to college. So taking a gap year, has never been a thought in my mind, but at this point I feel as I should consider it.
I have yet to contact the schools, because I am not sure about how to go about this issue and explain my struggles and mistakes, without sounding like I am asking for pity.
i agree with @gumbymom - you really should contact the schools BEFORE making any changes.
