Two English Composition Courses

Hello, I am trying to transfer to the UC system, but one of the requirements is to take Two english Composition courses.

I am from SFSU and I have taken first year english ENG 114, would that class fulfull 1 of the 2? Can I also choose to take a CCC class ENGLISH 1A to fullfill my second english comp course? or does it have to be sequential, ENG 214?

Also, why does it require two english courses? what are those two english classes used to fullfill? GEs?

I have also taken PHIL 110 Introduction to Critical Thinking I, A3, would that fullfill my 2nd course requiremnt

Thank you!

You’re in luck! Engl 114 at SFSU fulfills the first English. You need the equivalent of the second. I don’t see Phil listed do not sure I’d chance it.

You can see where your Engl 114 fulfills first Eng R1A equivalent here. Second is the R1B courses listed (214 and 215):

Hello, thanks for the reply, does this only apply to UC berkeley or is this UC wide? I really can’t afford to take another class cuz I already have so much on my schedule and I was hoping my PHIL already fullfills it

Also I posted on another forum and apparently this is what they said “Yea the 2 english courses are just for GE’s. Your Philosophy and English class should have them covered. I took one semester Philosophy and one semester English class and they cover the english requirements at all the UC’s I’m applying to.”

getting mixed information :frowning:

Talk is cheap. The only ones who can tell you if your particular Phil course fulfills the second English is the UC. They are very picky about the English requirement. Not every phil qualifies, as is seen in the link I sent. You need to get it straight from the horse’s mouth and not rely on anyone up here. I tend to think what Berkeley accepts is generally what will be accepted at all the UCs. So you either find out directly from the UC and if that is not possible I suggest you not risk a possible automatic rejection by making an assumption re second English. But that’s just me.

I also hope I can skip the composition and English classes next year. My rank was about 98, so I’m not sure if I will be qualified for the University Virginia if I ask to be exempted, but we will see. I haven’t been the best when it comes to compositions in my whole life since high school as I have a bit of a dyslexia issue. I’ll give you an example I was just training myself or with some capitalization worksheets in order to become better even at this simple task. I’m more of a mathematics guy I would say.
