Hi everybody, I am a current junior and I know it’s already the middle of second semester but I am just starting to freak out about my school schedule this year. I feel like it is not rigorous enough. There are kids in my class who take AP Bio, and I opted not to do this as I wanted to continue with a second language.
My schedule this year is:
AP English Language
AP US History
Advanced Precalc H
Physics H
Spanish 4 H
AP Psych
French III
I started Spanish in middle school and I loved it so much that I decided to add French on in my freshman year of high school. I continued to love French as high school progressed and decided to take French III for my junior year instead of AP Bio. I thought the two languages for three years straight would look good, but I’m now second guessing myself. Was this decision a mistake? I know colleges like to see commitment, which I guess I do show, but I feel like I’ve ruined my chances because I didn’t add on that other AP class.
To give you a sense, my dream school is Brown University, but my other top choices are Tufts, Wellesley, U Penn and Cornell
Should I continue with the two languages next year, so that I take AP Spanish and French 4 H, or an AP class in place of french?
Any help is appreciated Thank you!
Guys please helpppp
What is your career goal? Having a second language track would block you off for other classes for years. Unless the additional language is important to you, there are better options.
Well, I see no problem at all with taking two languages. In fact, I’ve been taking both French and Spanish since sophomore year, like you It’s definitely hard at first because languages don’t appear to carry much weight or be academically impressive. However, that’s not true. Schools in Europe are notorious for teaching students at least 3-4 languages before they graduate from high school. Languages are valuable in many facets, especially in international business and communications. Unless you’re really hoping to go into a STEM-related field, I would encourage you to keep taking two language classes if you enjoy them.
Does your school offer AP Physics I and/or AP Spanish Lang/Lit? If they do, try and add one of those if you’re worried about rigor.
I think taking two languages to an advanced level is great! Will you be able to take an AP science as a senior? If so, I don’t see a problem not having AP Bio this year on top of Honors Physics. Brown likes to see a Calculus class, so be sure to take that as a senior as well.
