Two more trivial dorm questions

These are more “mom” questions than anything my son cares about.

  1. how are coed dorms arranged? I just assumed they were alternating rooms (boy, girl, boy, girl) down the hall since that’s the way it is at my older son’s school. But while watching some of the YouTube videos, I heard someone mention “girls are on the 2nd and 4th floor, boys are on 1st and 3rd”. Is it the same for every dorm or does it vary?

  2. Do any of the dorms have music rooms? Back when I was in college (stone age), we had a couple of relatively soundproof rooms in each dorm where you could go to practice. Unlike some schools, it doesn’t look like UT prohibits amped instruments (son plays electric guitar and bass) as long as they comply with quiet hours. He will be soooo happy about that. He just assumed he would have to leave all of his instruments at home. But it would still be nice if there was someplace he could go and play with turn it up without bothering others.

From what I remember, boys and girls live on the same floor, but an entire section (such as a hall or corner) may be boys/girls only. Generally the boys’ rooms surround the boys’ bathroom and vice-versa.

My dorm had a piano lounge where I would see student occasionally play instruments (the room was mostly used as a study area). I know plenty of people who brought electric guitars but I have never seen them play anywhere in the dorms.

In Duren coed by room, but somewhat clustered. I remember seeing a piano in one of the common areas, but not really practice areas per se.

You can get music lockers and access to practice rooms in the music building fwiw. Nonmusic majors can, too, but may have to be involved with a formal music group, like in a class or in the uni orchestra.
