Does anyone know of the relative hierarchy of medieval history programs, not just general 'european history'? I imagine Yale and Berkeley and Princeton will be perched at the top as always, but I need to aim a little lower than that, and I have no idea how things stack up after the Big Three. I'm especially interested in public universities with generous funding.....

And if someone could weigh in on the merits of doing medieval history vs. medieval studies (with an emphasis in history), that would be really nice too.

Thanks!
