Two questions about my chances

<p>I was planning on using Michigan as one of my primary match/safety schools. I don't know if I'll have the chance to visit the campus (I live in NJ), although if it makes a big difference I can. That's one of my questions - will not having a visit affect my chances?</p>

<p>In addition, can I consider Michigan a safety or is it more of a match?</p>

<p>Top 10% of class in high school in NJ (400ish people in my class)
GPA: 3.9886 UW (4.3 for A+), 4.53 W (5.3 for A+) (pretty sure it's still considered a 4.0 and 5.0 scale, but not too sure)</p>

<p>SAT:
Superscore - 1500/2300 (700 cr/800 m/800 w)
Best sitting - 2260 (700/760/800)
PSAT: 204 (commended, notified BC and Northwestern)
ACT: 35 composite (34 writing, 36 math, 35, 35)
Senior year schedule:
Physics H
English 4A
AP Spanish
Gym
AP Econ
AP Environmental
AP Calc BC
Independent study: portfolio of newspaper stories I'm going to write</p>

<p>ECs:
- Newspaper: Feature editor (10, 11, 12), copy editor (9)
- Key club: editor (12), member (9, 10, 11)
- Spanish Honor Society: Co-president (12), member (11)
- NHS member (11, 12)
- Spring track (10, 11, 12)
- Winter track (11, 12)
- Jobs:
- Gym supervising (10, 11, 12)
- Umpiring softball (9, 10, 11, 12)
- Tutoring math (started this year, hopefully continuing and more consistent next year)
- Applying for job at the library as a page. If I get it, it's 11 hours a week starting in late August</p>

<p>Apply, EA if possible, so you hear in December. Visiting is always better (as much for your own sake as anything else). It’s not a requirement. Your stats look good.</p>

<p>You should get in. It probably will not make a difference if you visit.</p>

<p>you will get in but your GPA is not considered on a 4.0 scale because they give extra for an A+. not visiting doesn’t adversely your application. if you don’t screw up your essays you are pretty much in</p>

<p>Can you calculated your GPA without the A+ boost? I find I odd that you have such a high GPA and your only in the top 10%</p>

I don’t consider that odd. Top 10% is 40 people, and they get 4.3’s for A+'s.</p>

<p>Probably a reasonably safe match. No one OOS is a safety.</p>

<p>I think Purple and andre are idiots, you’ll get in for sure assuming you don’t draw the Ohio State logo in word art on your essay. People on CC in general overstate the difficulty of getting into the public ives (uva, um, unc, cal) as if it were HYPS.</p>

<p>I know a lot of people with your stats who got deferred then rejected during regular admission. It is really important that you apply EA. Since Michigan is on the common app, they get a lot of applicants.</p>

<p>lewis, no one will get rejected from michigan with a 35 ACT, it just doesn’t happen…</p>

Actually, this does happen, and I personally know a kid this happened to.</p>

<p>However, it is not exactly NORMAL. I like the poster’s chances as well, but prefer the word match to safety ;)</p>

<p>Kyle: agree w kmcmom; know a bunch of kids who were not accepted with higher than ACT’s of 32 and SAT’s above 2150…</p>

<p>Kyle…you seem to underestimate how hard it is to get into some “public ivys”. Cal has a low 20s acceptance rate. i’m sorry but i don’t believe that you can say a school is easy to get into when it rejects 4 out of 5 applicants</p>
