Two questions

Hello. I live in the stix of Northern New York State, so I've just started to consider Rice as a possible school for me. Am I stupid, or is there just not a virtual tour on their website? I can't seem to find it. If there is, can you give me a link, and if not, can you possibly show me some pictures of the campus?

My other question is hard to ask without sounding like a bad person, but...how exactly is the social scene? I know there are parties, but can you find them mostly any night you want, or are they primarilly a weekend activity?

I'm pretty sure there's a virtual tour or some such on the website, but I can't find it at the moment.

The social scene is pretty solid here. We partyr really hard on the weekends, but we're generally really busy during the week, so there's not much of a weekday party scene. I'm sure that if you look hard enough you can find it, or you can get friends together. Thursday nights are usually pretty solid, since there's pub night and nobody really cares about their Friday classes anyways. But other than that, people usually have too much work during the week to party too hard.

Here's a link to some Rice campus photos. http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~opa/pubs/imagelibrary/

Also, if you do a search on this forum you'll find a bunch more.

Also, send me a PM and I'll e-mail you photos of Rice and -- ahem -- the social scene.

Sweet. So, where exactly do parties occur if there are no frats?

Parties occur in the colleges. Most colleges have sections that are known as the "party area," so you can generally find something in one of these places. Also, most colleges host occasional public parties, such as the infamous NOD, which are often pretty exciting events. Some people party off-campus, but it's generally not necessary to do so in order to find something to do.

the alcohol policy is really lenient as well and you can party in your room and the cops don't have an automatic right to enter. anyone can also take alcohol in the halls, lounges, and other areas that aren't public such as lobbies or commons (unless you are over 21). unlike public state schools, the RAs aren't really there for disciplinary reasons and wouldn't ever take action for alcohol. no one cares and people are generally cool. last week on a tuesday these guys were playing beer pong until 5am and the cops were only called because one of them started urinating on someone's door.

The RUPD are generally really cool. Last weekend, one of them stopped my friends and me as we were walking between colleges just to "make sure we could walk."
