D has been admitted to one of the acting studios. My questions are: how can she take dance electives (ballet, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, pretty much anything) and can she take theatre electives at a different studio? She has 14 years of dance training and does not want to lose ground, but her studio has a movement rather than dance class in year one. Also, her favorite Broadway actress has just been named to the faculty at New Studio and will be teaching a cabaret performance class…is that something students at different studios could take as part of their non-studio classes?

All Tisch Drama students have to take Theater Studies courses. Within Theater Studies, there are some electives. For example, jazz and ballet are electives. So is private voice.

Sutton Foster’s cabaret class is also an elective within Theater Studies. My D has friends in it who are not in the MT studio.

Again, these Theater Studies electives pertain to ALL BFA in Drama students, no matter which studio. This is not part of their studio coursework. It falls under Theater Studies. In other words, you don’t take classes in another studio. These courses I just mentioned are part of the Theater Studies curriculum and elective offerings.

There are some dance classes offered to NYU students, on an elective basis, at least there used to be. They are, if I’m recalling correctly, likely not to satisfy an experienced dancer, though. Your best bet in that regard is to contact Tisch directly and ask what might be available to someone in a non-MT studio. Lots of Tischies take dance outside of NYU at one of the many venues available in the city.

All studio classes are for the members of that studio only, so, no, she will not be able to take any classes on an elective basis at another studio. Sutton’s class may be a Theatre Studies class, so you might want to look into that further.

x-posted with Susan: as I suspected might be the case, Sutton’s class would, theoretically, be open to any Tischie. The question is how many would actually get into the class.

This may be different next year, but this year, freshman we NOT allowed to take Sutton’s cabaret class, much to our display, because it has a performance at the end, and that goes against the ‘no performing as freshman rule’.

You can take those dance electives, but it’s really hard, if not impossible to do your freshman year. I don’t think I know anyone who does it through NYU or Tisch. They really try to get you to stick with the basic curriculum, that is: Studio, ITS/ITP and Writing the Essay. That fills up pretty much all of your credit load. You have room for a 2 credit elective 2nd semester- usually private voice, if you’d like. Extra credits are REALLY expensive. Lots of people take classes at outside places though- Broadway Dance Center and Steps on Broadway are both popular and have a variety of choice for your daughter :)

After your freshman year there’s a whole lot more flexibility with taking those elective courses. In some studios, there is a dance class as well. My studio, Strasberg, (which won’t be open to freshman next year, sadly) has ballet first semester, jazz second semester and I believe tap third semester. (However, if your daughter has had 14 years of dance, she might find it very basic at times, especially towards the beginning.) Adler also has ballet first semester. Playwrights has African Dance, I think. I’m not sure about the other studios in regards to specific styles of dance taught, but I do know that ETW is very movement oriented.

Hope this helps!

sutton’s cabaret is an elective, open to all upperclass drama majors, by audition.

i don’t know about dance electives now that CAP’s gone, but i guess they have them. i’d recommend taking dance lessons at an outside studio like Peridance, Steps or Dance New Amsterdam - you’re in New York City! you’d only get like 2 credits for them as electives anyway.

there were 10 in the cabaret class this semester.

there are also other cabaret classes taught by other teachers, you should audition for them too!
