Two University of Virginia graduates are among 12 national recipients of scholarships that will fund a yearlong stint living, learning and traveling in the island country of Ireland. Aaron M. Kurman, a 2005 UVa graduate, and Margaret M. Brennan, of the class of 2002, have been awarded the 2006/07 George J. Mitchell Scholarships, for which 236 applicants from 171 American colleges and universities competed. This is the fourth consecutive year that a UVa student or graduate has been honored as a Mitchell Scholar. The scholarships recognize young Americans who exhibit high standards of academic excellence, leadership and community service. The U.S./Ireland Alliance, an organization based in Washington, administers the scholarships, which were named in the honor of the role Mitchell, a former U.S. senator from Maine, played in the Northern Ireland peace process. The scholarship program links future American leaders to Ireland.</p>
