Hello, I had applied to Tyler as a transfer student for their BFA graphic and interactive design program. However after reviewing my portfolio the college said that I would be better suited for their BA visual studies program and have recommended that I change my major. To be honest, graphic design is what I want to do but Tyler is my first choice school. Can someone give me an insight on their visual studies course? Also, I have been accepted by art center Pasadena, art institute of Chicago (saic) and SCAD for their graphic design programs respectively. Should I opt for graphic design at one of these schools or go to Tyler for the visual studies program and try to shift to the BFA graphic design program over there after a semester or something? The reason tyler cannot offer me a place in their graphic design program is because my drawing skills are weak. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

my gut sense is u should go to teh school taht will let u major in your desired field. i will send an email to a mom of a Tyler student.

Hi - I’m the mom of a Tyler student mentioned by @ct1987 - my son is a freshman @ Tyler hoping to get into the graphic design program. My understanding is that there are 2 prerequisite graphic design courses that students take - fall semester sophomore year for most students. Once the classes are completed (or close to the end of the semester) students present a portfolio to apply for the graphic design major. There’s also a min GPA to get into the program. I honestly don’t know how easy or difficult it would be to switch from visual arts to graphic design after a semester or two. It does seem that Tyler places a lot of emphasis on drawing skills since all freshmen are required to take a drawing class both semesters as part of the foundation year. BTW, he loves the school.

I don’t know anything about the graphic design programs at the schools you mentioned since my son didn’t apply to any of them. Have you posted this question on the CC visual arts forum? You will probably get some feedback about the other schools graphic design programs you’re looking at.

I’ll ask my son what his thoughts are about the visual studies major and if it would be difficult to switch to graphic design.
