How's tyler's programs? I'm looking to transfer for graphic & interactive design. Right now I'm at the art institute of philly and it is the biggest waste of time. period. teachers don't show, not being challenged, etc. etc.

How's the classes and homework load? I'm considering double majoring with Pyschology

I’ve heard it’s extremely competitive, on par with the best art schools in the country. There is a different application cycle for students who want to attend. You are already in Philly, why not just go visit and talk to them?

My daughter is a freshman at Tyler. It is very competitive to get admitted, and probably too late to apply for Fall 2010 as the positions fill up quickly in the rolling admissions process. The tuition is significantly less (for in state residents) than most art schools (e.g. MICA, RISD, MassArt for non-state residents, Pratt). The foundation year is tough, but my daughter loves her art classes and raves about her teachers. The work load is pretty impressive - not much free time- and double majoring in psychology might be virtually impossible unless you intend to take 5 years (or more) to graduate. In addition to the art classes, there is a general education curriculum (11 courses) to complete for the BFA degree. I don’t know too much about the graphic arts program. Their painting and sculpture programs, however, are top notch (I believe that they are ranked in the top 5 nationally).

fwiw, it’s worth checking out the app deadlines for transfer students since that will probably be quite different than incoming freshman (for nonart it is June 1), which I guess is what the person above me is talking about.

In addition to the BFA program (which is very competitive), there is a BA program in Studio Arts that is easier to gain admission. The BFA admission requires a portfolio review. It is possible to transfer into the BFA program from the BA program if spots open up (usually in Spring semester. The best thing to do is to contact the Tyler Admissions Office for details.
