i'm still confused at the type of admission. is it rolling or is it EA/regular? i've heard from many people to apply early to give yourself the best shot but if it's just EA, wouldnt applying at any time be the same?

It’s pretty much just EA now. They released decisions over a few days this year but it really didn’t matter how early you got in before the EA deadline. Just apply EA to give yourself the best shot.

It’s EA/Regular… people recommend applying EA as a freshman (if you can) because it will realistically give you a head start when the admission board begins their selection process. Technically speaking, applying before the deadline will give you a decision by the EA deadline, however that decision could always end up being a deferral if it’s too late.

Additionally, my understanding is that decisions are on a rolling basis within both timeframes. The EA site specifically states you’ll get a notification “by December 23rd” so it could be before or on that date.

Apply EA with all your documentation in by the end of September or your chances dramatically go down… that’s what my son was told.

^That’s what he was told by a UM admissions rep? Cause I’ve never heard something like that, especially under the current EA system.

that’s contradictory

according to umich, applying EA does not “officially” give you an advantage, but in reality there is a significant difference in admissions standards between EA/RD.

I have personally spoken to an admissions officer about this, and I assure you it’s easier to get in EA than RD.

alright good. when is the earliest you can apply? september 1st?

^yes

Theoretically it should be Aug 1st since that’s when the new common app comes out… you can always call admissions and find out quickly.

Applying early is good But – and this is key. Having a good application is better. There is a thread down stream about a student who got her application in early and was rejected the poster (the Parent) felt that the student may not have written the best essay possible because of her desire to apply early.

The point, applying early should be a goal, but not a driver.

Example – does your HS have college admissions advisors? In our school, we found that they are not terribly busy in September, and can spend a lot of time helping students on their essay. My D (and I felt) that getting the professional assistance greatly improved her essays.

You should work on your essay questions over the summer because ideally you will give them a lot of thought. U-M’s supplemental essay questions to the Common App for 2012 are:

Essay #1 (Required for all applicants. Approximately 250 words.)

Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it.

Essay #2 (Required for all applicants. 500 words maximum.)

Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School (including preferred admission and dual degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests?

LOL, almost all supplemental essays come down to either:

“Why are you (the candidate) awesome?”, e.g, Essay 1. or
“Why are we (the school) awesome?”, e.g., Essay 2.

And Essay 3… “blah blah blah diversity!”

Just apply to engineer, lol. Essays don’t matter nearly as much. I wrote all of mine in one sitting a few days before I applied. I also recycled essays wherever I could. (Change Illinois to Michigan or Wolverine to Bearcat etc.)

Plus the engineering essays for every school are all the same. Why are you awesome/why are u interested in engineering and why is our school awesome/why do u want to come here?

Then the general essay “diversity” one I lo da had to BS. I live in a mostly white conservative neighborhood and went to a mostly white public high school… not a lot to right about.

Damn it…

Write*

haha yeah I’m in the same boat as you purple. the only diverse thing about me is that I’ve lived in three different states in my life (moving after freshman year). other than that, my weekends involve golf and tennis at a golf club - no diversity there…

I think everyone is very sick of the diversity question-it’s getting really old.
They must just want to throw up after reading them all. A lot of crap kids have to come up with. Why not have them write a short story on something the student is interested in?
