Hey guys,
I’m a sophomore in a community college here in California. I want to go into engineering of some kind but am kind of confused with all the different types. So far these are the ones I’m interested in and would like to know more. I’ve googled them and know the basics but would like more in-depth knowledge of what they actually do and what careers I can expect to get and what I will be doing in them.
Mechanical Engineering
Computer Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Mechatronics
Robotics
Computer engineering is essentially a specialty within electrical engineering, and mechatronics is essentially a specialty within mechanical engineering. Robotics is very interdisciplinary and you will be applying a lot of concepts from both mechanical and electrical engineering.
Both mechanical and electrical engineering are very broad disciplines, and the type of projects you work on are essentially given by the name of the field. There are many specialties within both fields, and in an ABET accredited undergraduate curriculum, you take fundamental courses in a number of them and decide what to specialize in by taking upper level elective courses. Wikipedia actually gives a very well written description of these two fields.
