Typical amount of ECs for an ugrad student looking to go to B-school

As I know, it's best to hold leadership positions in several ECs rather than being an average joe in ten different ECs. With that being said, how many extra-curricular activities should one participate in? Would I be in a good position if I were to hold leadership positions in three different clubs while also participating in volunteer work?

B School typically happens about 4 years after college for most people who want to attend a top 20 program. What you did with your time in college is less applicable to your applications than what you did with your time after college. Ofcourse if you were the student body president at a major university, then that would probably look pretty good to mention on an application, however showing your ability to be a leader shouldn’t end in college. If you want to get involved with something after college, make sure its something that you are passionate about. Sincerity flows well in an essay.

Yes, the next step is to shoot for top jobs. In order to get these top jobs, you need to get top internships. Try to get the best internship you can get in the field in which you’re interested. The best way to build a resume for internships is through clubs. That said, 3 leadership positions in ECs is quite good (depending on what the positions actually entail).

My plan is to intern during the summers of my sopohmore, junior, and senior years. After graduating, I’d like to land a job at a well-known firm, preferably Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, GS (I can dream right?), or Credit Suisse. My ultimate goal, similar to many others on this board, is to get into a top business school after having 3-4 years of work experience. I appreciate your support and may have more questions as I begin my collegiate career this fall.

I-Banking internships (like most quality summer internships) generally occur in the summer between your junior and sennior year. I havn’t heard of any other time frame for these types of internships. If you have a language requirement at your school, you may want to knock it out over the summer between sophomore and junior year abroad. Make sure the school that you go to in undergrad is a target school for the companies that you mentioned. Otherwise it will be an uphill battle for you to get a spot.

If you want to get an internship at GS (provided that they recruit at your school and you have perfect grades), I would get involved in activities where you not only show you have some leadership skills, but also are able to show that you have the ability to work in a team environment. GS is huge on the teamwork philosophy.

You don’t typically do any internship after your senior year. You go to work.
