I’ve been wanting to start my own club but i’m torn between a medical and Asian identity club. I know that lots of Asians have very similar ECs and I was wondering if creating either one of those would make me seem more or less “Asian” on paper.
What is an “asian identity club?”
more specifically Asian Student Association but we would talk about asian identity and culture
If you’re doing this to impress colleges, then don’t. It’s obvious EC padding.
How could an Asian identity club make you seem “less Asian?”
Doing that will make you more or less Asian. The thing is, you checked the box that says Asian, so you will be Asian. There is no way you can cheat your race and ethnicity.
@snarlatron , haha! Oh boy, this post has given me the giggles. I am sorry, OP, but seriously? This wins a prize for funniest post ever!
To seem more Asian, I suggest you start the Asian Identity Club. To seem less Asian, try starting the Scandinavian Identity Club. That might throw them off the scent.
On a more helpful note, you are a swimmer? That doesn’t strike me as particularly Asian. Why not start a swimming club to benefit local kids or similar?
Lots of Asian -American kids on our swim team.
But who cares?
Exactly.
The “typical” Asian does ECs that don’t particularly have much depth. Actually, the “typical” student do ECs that lack depth. If you have commitment to an EC and you become passionate through it, then that’s unique against the canvas of the countless other students who don’t have that same commitment. The catch is that commitment is hard for obvious reasons.
haha an Asian club is definitely…Asian.
On the general question of “Asian” EC’s…I mean this is really up to personal experience/opinion since no one would bother to get the statistics on this topic, but I’m Asian, met tons of Asians, and have read a bunch of the “results” threads on CC etc…and there are Asians doing EVERYTHING. However, here are a few random things that Asians (and frankly, most high school students), are less likely to do as an EC…
-Extreme Sports like bungee jumping, sky diving, BMX
-Gold Mining
-Urban Farming
-Fly-Fishing or being on the Varsity Fishing Team
-Illegal Activity
but anyways…I don’t encourage you to do random EC’s …do things you like! but of course, try new things! don’t partake in illegal activity though…definitely not a real EC.
Good luck! (on a more serious note, both a medical club and Asian club are not rare on applications. but if those are your interests, go fore it!!)
