Typical courseload?

How many courses do the regular rutgers student take per semester? How many credits is going overboard. How many credits is it manageable to get all As in all the classes with ample time. I don't really have any reference frame for this so I am asking you guys this.

In the perspective of an engineer preferred.

There’s really no true answer to this question. It varies by the particular student, the difficulty of the classes, and your major. As an engineer, you pretty much have to be taking 16/17 credit semesters on average if you want to graduate in four years. Other majors could be a little less. 12 credits is the minimum for being a full time student. The difficulty of classes is also really important in determining this. For example, I had a 21 credit semester my freshman year that was considerably easier than a 16 credit one during my sophomore year.

I had a question about my courseload. I’m going to be a freshman this year and I’m an A/B student, not exceptionally smart, but average. I’m taking: Calc 1 (135), Expository Writing, General Biology, General Psychology and a FIGS, equaling a total of 15 credits. Do you think think that that is a hard courseload for an average first semester student. I’m worried if I should keep this schedule or drop General Psychology and do it in the Spring Semester, because I don’t want to flunk any class, especially Calc and Expos, which will be rough. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you! :)

I would say Gen Bio would be the most time consuming because its alot of reading and memorization. Plus the Lab is 3 hrs a week.

Calc is what you make it. If you do the homework and go to tutoring/office hours if you need help then you will be fine. Some teachers will assign 5 to 10 collected problems out of 20 but you should try to do all so you have a feel for the questions. Also, most likely the homework and classwork problems might be easier than the exams so be weary of that which is why avgs of the first exam might be low. Trust me when i say its a good fealing when you are way above avg.

Expos is expos. You have to write annoying papers every week. Don’t procrastinate.

I would says its an avg medium difficulty course load.

FIGS is easy from what i hear.
Psych is easy course depending on professor. Look them up on ratemyprofessors.

Figure out the amount of credits you need to graduate.

Subtract AP credits, transferred credits, from the total.

Divide by 4 years. If you are an engineer, you may want to divide by 5 years ;)

So this is the average credits you will need to take each year to graduate ‘on time’.

Some semesters will have harder classes than others. At these times, you may want to take one less class, and maybe make up the credits during winter break or summertime.

You can’t look at one semester in a vacuum.

A regular student probably averages between 14 and 16 credits a semester, but this is highly dependent on the classes you need to take AND the difficulty level of those courses.

To narora: That schedule is not too bad and General Psychology is a VERY easy class. I have not heard of a professor that has been described as hard.

Expos is tough, but manageable and bio will probably be your hardest class. Still, I think your overall schedule is manageable.
