My son wants to explore a few science options before locking things down. He’s interested in Geology, Biology, Environmental Science, and Anthropology. Given the Bates general requirements, what does a typical first semester schedule look like for a science-y kid? I realize he will have the opportunity to speak with an adviser in July, just wanted to get a sense of things from you folks.
Their First Year Seminar professor becomes their advisor until they declare a major so I would recommend taking FYS related to one of those fields. My D is not a science major so I’m not sure otherwise.
The distribution reqs are very loose. My D took anthro as a freshman because it met the req for quantitative maths or something like that. There are very few general requirements. It will be easy to explore all those options, but probably not all in the first semester. Majors aren’t declared until end of sophomore year so he has plenty of time to decide.
I agree with the previous post. If he’s going the bio route, he will eventually have to take chem, so he may as well do it in freshman year.
How about a science-y first year seminar, a foreign language, a social science, and chemistry or environmental science?
Many options. He can take general chem, intro geology and intro physics are offered in the fall. Intro bio is in the spring. The advisors are pretty good, according to D2. He can talk to students either here on CC or when he arraives on campus.
