Hi!
I am wondering if anyone can tell me what classes a freshman would typically take if they’re interested in the social sciences, given the distribution requirements at Haverford.
I’m interested in political science and creative writing, but what science/math classes should I take my first year?
Please and thank you!
The distribution classes are not a big deal, and they are not something you should worry about. There are plenty of science courses that are interesting (even not science students) to choose from. A lot of my friends interested in the social sciences took Astronomy (which counts as a quantitative course as well as a natural science) and loved it. Other popular classes to consider are Geology and Perspectives on Biology.
I expect that you’ll probably take 2 or 3 political science courses (or other courses that build towards your major) your freshman year. The other 5-6 courses will be distribution requirements, language courses, your writing seminar (which could relate back to your interest in creative writing), and other random courses that look interesting to you.
I’m a science person, but this year I took a lot of courses outside of the natural sciences, and I really enjoyed them. I’m sure you will be able to find courses that will interest you across the disciplines.
