Ive heard that ibankers word 80-100 hrs a week and I was curious was this over 7 days or m-f?

Weekend work is very normal, especially as an analyst.

Keep in mind that your 80-100 figure is more like an average workweek than the extreme of 90-120 hrs per week which happens I’d estimate 15 - 30% of the time depending on your group.

If your group is a sweatshop, 90+ hrs. per week can easily be your average workload.

For my d’s friends who are with major firms… the workload is intense. You are at your desk at 7 AM and frequently don’t leave until 10 PM or so…and yes you generally are expected on Saturday as well, maybe not at 7 AM.

7AM to 10PM M-F + a few hours on Saturday is not intense by investment banking standard. Although there’s no such thing as a typical week, the median week may look something like this: 8AM to 1AM M-F, 10AM to 7PM on Saturday. It varies with groups and deals.

Alright thanks. Do most ibankers live really close to work then to get a bit of sleep and do many get divorced? Haha

Living close to work is a must if you are working those kinds of hours.

Some girl at my firm lived about 1 hour away from work and the commute nearly killed her. If you get off work at 2am, drive 1 hour to get home, take 30 mins to fall asleep, and be forced to wake up at 7am to make it in by 8:30a in traffic… you won’t last long.

I live about 5 minutes from work and this definitely allows me to be more productive. Get out at 2a, try to fall asleep by 2:30a, wake up at 8:30a and get in by 9a. It makes a huge difference!

only the senior bankers stack up on trophy wives

Alright thanks so much everyone! Are the rates for houses/apartments close by to most firms super expensive from your experience?

Depends on the city…do research

average of 100 hour weeks. I think they usually start at 8:30/9 am because they get out so late. Saturday work is the norm and not the exception.

Alright thanks

Actually, most bulge bracket (no, all bulge bracket banks) normally start at 9 am and get out at about 1 am. That’s the same as research except two hours ahead (they get in at 7 am and leave at 11 pm). The difference is that IB goes in on weekends. Research does too, and you can find people working similar long hours. But it’s not horrible.

Indeed, sometimes you find research working more hours than IB…depends on the earning seasons, the deal, etc. etc.

And yes, it’s a span of 7 days. It’s not as bad as people think it is. Plus, you don’t ALWAYS work that much. It varies.

“Do most ibankers live really close to work”

You don’t have to live super close. When you work late, you don’t have to walk or take the subway home. you just take a cab and expense it. A cab can get you home in very little time.

These hours sound horrible…

And you think it’s worth it??

Trading has much better hours. Haha Most likely a lot more stress but probably more money -
Front office.

Just a thought.
