typical student....wonderin my chances... any advice would be appreciated

hey guys, im a High school junior, and was wonderin what you guys thought of my chances. Please be honest cuz most of you guys are pretty experienced w/colleges and such, much more than me.

here are my stats...nothing too magnificent:

competitive public high school
3.38/4 UW gpa; 4.2/5 weighted
rank: 80/300
I took a lot of AP's, the rest honors; hardest course load available (7 APs by the end of high school)
SAT (one sitting): 2120
Im planning on taking 3 SAT 2's ( math, chem, and english); prob get in the middle to high 600's on math, and 700's in english n chem.

EC's

over 200 hrs Community service ( silver prez award)

interned at law office, hospital, and laborotory

worked 4 times/week freshman and sophomore years takin care of internal affairs in a dealership.

Varsity soccer and track

NHS

im lookin to take the pre-med route, as ive always wanted to be a doc

Here's my list (some i know are mad reaches)

BC
BU
case western
U of Rochester
NYU
Brandeis ( i rlly love dis school, deff #1 choice)
UMASS amherst (safety)
vanderbilt
JHU

can you guys also reccomend any more schools? Im actually searching and would really appreciate anyones advice, cuz i want to check them out. Schools that fall into my range, and have decent pre med programs.

Thanks again everyone...

tonz

I have to say a low-ish gpa with high test scores generally doesn't look too good because it makes you look like a smart slacker...you're clearly not though. are there any circumstances that would explain your lower gpa or is it just your challenging courseload? the fact that your class schedule is so challenging will make your gpa look better though.

great ecs. nothing to worry about there. if you write great essays and get great recs it'll definitely give you a boost.

unfortunately your rank makes your chances hard to gauge....here's my estimates...

bc- reach
bu- low reach
case - match, maybe a reach if you're going for premed because a lot of people do that there
rochester - high match - low reach
nyu - possibly a reach?
brandeis - could be a match, if you applied ED it would defintely help you because it's not a crazy school like harvard or something where ED/EA would make no difference
umass - safety in-state
vanderbilt - reach-ish
jhu - reach-ish, especially for premed because of what I said about case.

overall you have a lot going for you. like I said before your class rank could weigh you down but everything else makes up for it. it's good that you have a reliable safety, hopefully you actually like umass because you may well ahve to go there because of money, acceptances/rejections, god knows what. good luck and I hope you get into brandeis for the class of 2012!

thanks for the reply... but there is no explanation for my gpa. It's just difficult balacin life, sports, and school. Some people here are mad stressed, i care a lot, but not as much as a majority ( im new, but from what ive seen reading these past few minutes people here either BS or are unbelievably capable).... if you have any schools you think I should check out dat would fit me, it wud help a lot. Thanks again. :)

well for starters what kind of things are you interested in? also it seems like you're mostly interested in the east coast and maybe the south...what other places would you want to be in for college?

more safeties/matches....
publics: the university of maryland
penn state
rutgers
st mary's in maryland (public LAC)
suny stony brook
clemson

private schools....
rhodes
sewanee
the university of pittsburgh
elon

that's all I can think of for now with the info you gave me

im looking to stay near MA, but if need be, i will move. Does anyone else have anymore advice on my chances?

bring my post up.

hey datruth, you've got good ECs
how did u get all those internships?

The lower UW GPA with practically all honors/AP courses does make it difficult to know how you will be judged by some of these colleges. But the 2120 SAT should really help.

BC--Slight Reach
BU--Match
case western--Match to Slight Reach
U of Rochester--Match
NYU--Match, except at Stern (Match to Slight Reach)
Brandeis--Toughest school to call--I'd say Match
UMASS amherst --Definitely a safety
Vanderbilt--Reach
JHU--Slight Reach

Other good schools as safeties would be Ohio State, Connecticut, Indiana, Michigan State, Pittsburg, and Rutgers.

I'd definitely apply to Boston University and Ohio State. They have great pre-med programs and great medical schools. U of Rochester's pre-med program is also top-notch and the school is beautiful. And I don't need to talk about JHU, do I? (maybe the best pre-med school in the country--only real rivals are Princeton and Georgetown)

Best of success.

BC--Slight Reach
BU--Match
case western--Slight Reach
U of Rochester-safety
NYU--out of reach (nyu is really unpredictable)
Brandeis--match
UMASS amherst --match
Vanderbilt--Reach
JHU--Slight Reach
