Is it typical for a junior to take the SAT twice in their junior year or do you think that it's rushing things a bit?
Also, when do people start the process with college applications and what not...?

A few of my friends took the SAT twice in their junior year, I took it once in May, and might retake it in October. As a junior, take the PSAT of course first, then try to take the SAT in January and then again in March or May to improve your score. There is no reason to start your college applications very early, especially since they usually update the common app for your year (Class of 2011 right?) in the summer. So start your applications in the summer into the beginning of your senior year (Sept + Oct)

from my experience it is fairly typical to take it twice your junior year

I think most people take the March one and June one, that was how it was for me and all of my friends at least

I took it October/January of my junior year, because I was in a PSAT prep class at school (basically they put all of the smart kids together into this so that we’d get commended/(semi)finalist and the school would look better) that ended in October a week before the test date. October = 2040, January = 2050, superscored = 2110

I personally don’t know why anyone would want to take the SAT over the summer…

Yep, I did that.
