Typical UCI student?

I'm an admitted student for 2014, and I just attended the Admit Day on April 17. I still don't have a good feel for the students at UCI. Are they well-rounded, or are they more academic than social? I know that you will find extremely academic people and extreme partiers at every school, but what is the overall feel of the college?-Academic, social, or a good balance of the two?

Probably not what you wanted to hear but it really depends and I don’t think anyone can really answer that question for you. It depends where you look, like whether you’re looking at the frat people or the chemistry club people ya know? But if you MUST categorize people which is not really possible, I’d say we are no UC Santa Barbara that has a party reputation, that’s for sure.

I went the event on April 17th as well, but I definitely got a feel of the school. Did you talk to the students and attend the student seminars?

Don’t worry, I felt the same way last year too. After touring the school, I still didn’t get that feeling of belonging to the campus.

Well, for UCI you’ll see your fair share of partiers and studiers it all depends on where you associate with most. It all really depends on your personal interests. And to be honest, weekends are dead here. A LOT of people go home so the campus is pretty vacant and calm, so you won’t really see anything crazy going on, on the weekends.

Thanks for the replies!

Yes, I talked to several students and attended the seminars but I was mainly trying to get a feel for the academic side of things. Everyone seemed really nice and helpful, but it was admit/open house day so it was hard to tell. There was still a large crowd that wasn’t from UCI that was there.

Wow, I didn’t know that there are a good number of people that go home on the weekends. Is the nightlife on the weekends as empty as the daytime sounds?

If you want an exciting nightlife you have to make some friends with partiers at the dorms/apartments or go elsewhere for action. I myself was never into that, so I was content with just hanging out with some friends on weekends and going out to dinner/shopping/beach etc. but yeah, you really have to make an effort if you want to do more than sit around an empty campus. There are a few events sometimes on weekends such as Shocktoberfest ([Shocktoberfest - Home](Web Server's Default Page)) but for the campus as a whole there aren’t that many events actually ON campus during weekends.

parties happen, you just have to be in with that crowd to know what’s going on and where. but uci is generally a commuter school… i have late classes on friday, and by 2 or 3pm i can already tell that campus is starting to empty out. there are still people around, but far less than a normal day

I had night labs on Friday night during one quarter of my freshman year and when I had to go back to my dorm after lab finished at 10PM it felt like I was alone in the world hahaha  Luckily I lived at M.E. so the walk wasn’t too bad and once I hit the basketball courts there was signs of life again :p

Thanks for the replies! I decided on UC Irvine and turned in my SIR. Now on to picking a residence hall! Any thoughts on which is better, Middle Earth or Mesa Court, or on what the diffeences are?
