I proofread my essays about 10 times, but missed that I had misspelled the last word of my intellectual essay (the worst place ever). It reads something like "compose its masteriece." I feel like an idiot. I have no idea how this happened, other than maybe I glossed it over each time because I knew how it ended, or something. I mean, I think my essays were pretty strong overall (or so thought my editors), but with my "average asian" standings and everything...just a bit scared.

Crap.

Is there really no way for me to change this? I just can't believe I spent all this time working on my essays, and then screwed up one of the most important words on there.

Hey. Don't sweat it. Last year, I made a really dumb grammatical error in one of my Cornell essays. I think it was because I was trying different sentence structures, so in the midst of copying, pasting, and changing things around, I left the mistake. I can't remember the exact error, but it was definitely many times worse than yours! So for some reason or other I didn't even get to have a personal interview; so I had no contact with Cornell at all with regard to that error. It was no big deal though because I was accepted anyway.

Do I go to Cornell? No. I got several better offers. In fact, I'm a freshman at Princeton University right now. But again, don't sweat it. They'll realize that it was just a silly mistake and theyll look beyond it. As long as the rest of your application is worthy of an acceptance, then a trivial error isn't going to be your downfall.* Just relax, take a deep breath, and forget about it. :) Best of luck w/ everything!

*And if you arent accepted, DO NOT blame it on that insignificant typo. You may find comfort in that kind of defense mechanism, but it wont be true. Chances are if you're not admitted, it would be for more realistic reasons. Just keep that in mind.

The mind glosses over words and fills them out since it "knows" what the sentence/word will be. Most probably the admissions readers will "see" the word as it it supposed to be (masterpiece) because their mind fills it in like that.

Don't worry!!! It's too late anyhow :P

P.S. As APDoolittle said----don't blame the typo if you don't get in
