I can't believe this just happened, but on the NYU application I submitted last night, I made a typo (in the form of a word omission). It wasn't a typo in the essays but a typo in the activities section, where I was supposed to describe an activity but ended up missing a verb.

I'm quite worried - how much will this impact my chances?

I don't think it is a big deal at all, provided that the rest of your application is error-free. I mean, I had to write three long, thoughtful, well-written essays, and I too left out a "what" in one of my sentences in one of them, but hopefully they won't even notice. It took me like 4 times reading it to finally catch it.

Don't worry about it. Chances are the readers won't even notice it. They are looking at sections like that for the facts of your activities; so they are not parsing the grammar or writing style.

Then again you may get "style points" given the particular typo :D.
