So I just realized I made several typos in my common app essay. My computer crashed the other day and I lost them so I had to retype them from hard copies. I didn't have anyone who could read over them and when reading your own work you often miss the typos since you know what's coming next. Now I've just realized I wrote "my" instead of "me," "need" instead of "needed," and and comma where a period should be. Now I'm freaking out. How bad will this look?! Especially Cornell ED?! Should I email the admissions staff? I'm hoping maybe it'll make me look human instead of sloppy.... seriously FML.

Don’t worry. People do that often ;)

I don’t want to make you feel bad or anything, but the one thing I really remember about my NYU visit was the head of admissions taking about essay typos. I type really fast and make a lot of silly mistakes that spell check doesn’t catch (e.g. perform and preform), but I read through my essay at least 15 times before I submitted it… and I was just applying to safety schools early.

You could try contacting the admissions staff, but I think it would depend on when the deadline is. If you submitted early, you might get lucky.

They said that a few grammatical and spelling mistakes will not compromise my app but I could still fax a revised copy in. Should I? I don’t want to seem anal then but it’d definitely give me peace of mind.
