ok so I got accepted to 8 schools but I really think its gonna come down to these two... so which one would you choose

SUNY University at Buffalo

-tuition like 11,000/12,000 a year, I got a scholarship for around 10,500 a year (no need based aid yet but I dont think I'd get very much if any) so pretty cheap and maybe even cheaper than UMD
-major would be environmental design.. seems like a good program and I would like it.. I would go to grad school for urban planning or something related..
-ranked like 120ish on usnews so I mean fairly prestigious but its not very well known/do you think that would hurt when applying to grad school/getting a job?
-I havent visited yet but buffalo seems nice.. good places like niagara falls/ toronto not too far away
-I dont know about fitting in because almost everyone is from ny state and I'm not.. but I guess college is about adapting and stuff lol

University of Maryland - College Park

-tuition like 8000 a year, no scholarship I dont think and no need based aid yet.. but its an in state public so its cheap
-major would be landscape architecture.. then I would probably go to grad school for urban planning. seems like a lot harder than UB's program and I would be going to the same grad schools most likely
-ranked like 50ish on usnews... pretty prestigious and well known but not like leaps and bounds above UB
-college park is bleh but DC is pretty nice.. have baltimore near by and philly/ny somewhat.. my hometown is like 2.5 hours away but distance from home isnt a concern
-would probably fit better because some friends will be around dc/baltimore metro area as well and its my own state so I guess I know the people better?

ok so which would you pick based on price/prestige/going to be going to grad school anyway/social life and city

other contenders (in order kind of) are philadelphia university, umass amherst, northeastern, NYIT, uw madison, rutgers, umn twin cities but choose between UB and UMD

I'm glad you are weighing your options without just jumping on the more highly ranked one. Buffalo is a really nice school. That said, without knowing much more about you, I would probably think UMD is the better choice for you. You should really visit Buffalo because I don't think the area is really all that spectacular. I don't want to bad-mouth it too much cuz a lot of my friends are going to UB, but the city of Buffalo is kinda run-down nowadays and I don't think Niagra Falls and Toronto are any better than DC and Baltimore and are not that much closer to Buffalo, either. Oh and you must know that Buffalo gets mountains of snow. Plus, costs seem like they will be close for you.
I would, however, say go to Buffalo if you really want a change of pace and don't want to be stuck around other Marylanders for 4 more years. I can't speak too much of the L.Arch. programs, so you'll have to weigh that for yourself.
Basically: visit Buffalo for yourself!

Edit: Personally, I like Wisconsin myself just because I've always liked that school for some reason.

Edit Edit: Okay, I posted this before your second post so yeah it seems like you know more than I do already. Basically ignore what I said then...but still visit.

-I really wanna spend a semester or year abroad and I think UB would be better for that because the curriculum would be looser
-I would prefer marylands weather to UB lol I dont know how much that counts
-I think UB has more majors/minors I'd be interested in if I decide to switch majors
-UB is a little bit smaller so thats a good thing
-UB might be a little safer
-MD doesnt have tons of people from long island lol
-I guess maryland would have more opportunities for internships
-I'd be in the honors program at UB I think... maybe scholars program at MD

yeah I really need to visit UB and also visit MD again
I think I would really like wisconsin but I got waitlisted lol and its gonna be too expensive I think

My dad went to UMD so I'm biased. I've been to the school and loved it. I didn't apply there because it's too far away and very difficult to get into from out of state. Maryland has a beautiful campus and there seemed to be a lot going on when I was there. I don't know if you like sports, but Maryland has a good basketball team and an improving football team. There's probably more school spirit at Maryland because of the division I sports. I know almost nothing about Buffalo besides the fact that it has a pretty good academic reputation. I'd probably rather go to Maryland, but that is my opinion. Definitely visit both campuses again. See if they allow students who have been admitted to stay overnight.

U Maryland...my d. got in out of state, and almost went, but they didn't have her major. i don't know size of UB, but UMD is very large, yet beautiful, with more moderate climate.

do not choose buffalo unless you go and visit it first. and really be prepared for much harsher winters than you are used to. but the good side re the weather is -- they know how to handle the snow -- i have lived in both maryland and upstate ny (both many years ago) -- at least when i did, it didn't take much snow to shut down maryland, but in upstate ny they would handle huge amounts with barely a shrug (though there are the times everything shuts down for a day or two when it gets really really bad). just remember -- when people tell you there is a lot of snow up there -- it is probably way more than what you normally consider "a lot."

one more thing i thought of for you to consider -- if you are thinking of buffalo because it is near places like niagara falls and toronto - be sure to ask how easy it is to get to those places -- would you need a car to take advantage of the surrounding areas that interest you -- and if so, really stop to think about what it means to have a car in a place that gets the amount of snow that buffalo gets.

I went to UB for grad school and College @ Buffalo for undergrad. I agree, please visit both beofre you decide.

Here are some facts for you on Buffalo rather than rely on subjective comments.

-I echo unbelievablem comments. Unlike cities that rarely get a taste of winter, Buffalo, Toronto... have perfected snow removal. I would rather be caught in Buffalo after 18 inches of snow that in College park after 1 inch.

-Buffalo the city does not get the snow people are making it out to get. Most snow fall is south of the city, near Seneca. From time to time the snow band trends north and Buffalo gets hit, but in the 6 years I was in Buffalo, I did not think they got hit especially hard with snow. I guess if your coming from a warmer client that gets almost no snow, then any snow might be an issue

-Buffalo is certainly a "rust belt" city, so it is not a place of revival (yet). If you are looking for the programs you are, then it is actually a perfect place. I went to school for Urban Planning and found the city to be a wonderful opportunity to explore theories and tactics relating to that field. There are some fantastic UP, LA and ED firms in the area. There are some strong internships and labs for your field too.

Toronto is barely a 80 min drive and people are making road trips there all the time. if you dont have a car but can make friends, you can get there. it is a GREAT city. It is more diverse than NYC. The best korean food I ever had was in that city. In general, jaunts across the border are a blast (Ft Erie, Niagra Falls, Tornoto, Niagra on the Lake...).

Niagra area is wine country, great for fall excursions in NY or in Canada.

You are on the water. Sailing on Lake Erie is alot of fun as are rides on the Niagra. A number od restraunts to dock, eat and drink at.

For my generation, I blame that Alka Seltzer plus ad that used to start "BUFFALO, NEW YORK!" and a camera shot of people barely able to stand upright in horrid blowing snow.

Anyway, I understand Maryland may be better known, but I can't believe how impressive some of the people I've met out of UB are. They're doing something right there.
