U Chicago (Econ) vs NYU Stern

Having troubles deciding between the two. Help me out? Thanks!

Need to know more about your career goals, cost difference, qualifications, social expectations, ect.

Probably going to pursue a career in either International Business or Finance. At the moment Chicago is 20,000 dollars cheaper per year, I want to study Chinese alongside the business studies, will be on a varsity athletic team at both. I like both cities equally, but definitely like the campus feel of Chicago as opposed to the random building of NYU. I hope to graduate, go to work for a few years then probably go back to school to get an MBA somewhere. Thanks for the help!

Then UChicago all the way since it’s $20k cheaper. Keep in mind that you can take Booth MBA classes to supplement the econ curriculum. Both schools are similar in that they’re in major cities and also have an significant intellectual feel to them. However, at UChicago, the focus will be on theory, whereas the focus at NYU will be on practice. This will also be a question of if you want to go to a school with more recruiting but with everybody gunning for the same role (NYU Stern) or a school with a little less recruiting but with noticeably students gunning for the traditional Wall Street Finance and consulting jobs.

I would go to UChicago. It’s cheaper, more prestigious, has a better Econ & MBA program, ect. Location-wise it’s in Hyde Park, a suburb of Chicago, a fairly quiet neighborhood unlike NYU’s. You can take classes at Chicago Booth as an undergrad. You can also access the Booth network for internships and jobs.

Chicago is definitely a harder school, though, so you’ll have to hustle when balancing sports with classes.

Chicago’s varsity training facilities are on campus. My impression is at least some NYU’s are off campus - so one has to commute to there. When you have a chance to visit NYU you may ask this question.

My D is on a varsity team at the college here. She trains 5 days per week and year round. No commuting to off-campus facilities has saved her a lot of times.

I know that the soccer teams play at multiple fields including Manhattan college.

Why would you ever pick NYU over UChicago? Especially when UChicago is cheaper for you.

Um… this is easy, unless being in NYC for college is an absolute deal breaker for you. Chicago is stronger for econ and business, and has a great Chinese program. Overall Chicago is also a lot more prestigious. And you have even said that it is 20k cheaper. This is really a no brainer, unless you visited and hated the vibe.
