I'm currently a junior and am applying to the University of Chicago this fall. I'll be using the common app to apply and I'm wondering if this will decrease my chances of bring admitted. I've heard that UChicago encourages applicants to use the prompts that they post rather than the common app prompts. Is this true and would using the common app prompts have any affect on on my chances of being admitted. Thanks.

Yes, sa0209 is right. Use the Common App. The Common App will then also give you access to the U of Chicago supplement, which is where you will write/upload a separate essay based on the “interesting” U of Chicago additional essay prompts. But the U of C essay prompts are new each year, so you will have to wait until sometime next year to find out what they are. They are available sometime in the late spring/early summer usually (I think there was a thread out here about them when they were announced last year, assume the same will happen this year).
