Hi My son was admitted to the mechanical engineering program. We are also deciding between UVM and SUNY Buffalo. He also got into U of Maryland but not a direct admit to engineering. Forgetting the cost issue can someone tell me more about the engineering school’s reputation and if it jumps out to you as way better than our other choices. How is the support, internships, can you go abroad etc. Thanks a bunch.
It is my opinion that undergraduate engineering at UConn is second to none. I wouldn’t go to Maryland (or UConn or any other flagship) hoping to transfer into engineering at a later date as the odds are generally very low.
@notigering Hi, Saw your post. My D is deciding between Syracuse and UConn for Mech E. What are some things about UConn’s program that you like so much? Thanks!
Engineering is different than other fields. For a long list of reasons flagship state universities tend to offer about the best possible engineering resources and UConn is no exception. Fundamentals (which is all she will do in undergraduate) are the same everywhere but flagships tend to be more rigurous and this can pay in the long run. For example engineering transfers from regional UConn campuses oftentimes struggle once in Storrs even when they arrive with a high gpa.
I would only trade UConn (undergraduate engineering) for Syracuse if the second was more affordable (meaning UConn was out of state or Syracuse gave lots of aid) and money was an issue.
Thank you very much! Helpful info
We visited UConn this past weekend. The campus was beautiful and the program was very good. My son felt it was very rural though and wanted to be closer to a city etc. but really seemed great nonetheless.
@goteam2 It is cow country! But at least there’s their ice cream in the cafeteria :). My husband and are alum and I’m trying to reconcile my experience 30 years ago with the UConn of today. My academic experience I don’t think is relevant being so long ago so I really need outside info. Thank you!
