U Mich Transfer Statistics

For those who applied, were rejected/gained admission can you post your stats?

Accepted LSA (I wanted to apply to the Engineering school but they have very strict pre-reqs..so they recommended I apply LSA and then transfer into Engineering once I have Linear Algebra completed)
Freshman at Drexel University
3.91 GPA
770M 700V
730 Math I 730 Writing 690 Chem

Linear Algebra -> most pointless math class I have taken

why was linear algrebra pointless?

linear algebra is basicaly matrices...and vectors....the stuff they talk about is pretty theoretical (try to imagine a vector space..wth!) and we didnt' work on many applications I guess that's why...I enjoyed the class but had no idea what I would be using it for...my favorite class so far is Differential Equations

I LOVE Differential Equations.

Michigan Engineering has some ridiculous Transfer Prerequisites:

Calc I, II, III, IV
Differential Equations
Linear Algebra

...just to transfer!!! There's a long list of other things they want, too.

it is actually quite useful in cs math

haha I am trying to get by without taking one ounce of calc. Any more Umich prospies/acceptees want to post their stats, I know your out there!

Layla121986: I think that's pretty standard...most UCs here have these Math requisites:

Calc I, II, III, Diff, Linear

what's Calc IV?

It is not standard to have those as prerequisites for SOPHOMORE standing. I am only a freshman.

my mistake--it's calc 1 2 3 Diff Eq and Linear Alg:

http://www.engin.umich.edu/students/prospective/undergraduate/admissions/transfer/external/

Prerequisites:
Students seeking admission to a degree program must complete, at minimum, the following prerequisites. (Grades in math, chemistry and physics should be at least "B" level.)

* Math: Two years of math including: Calculus I, II and III; Linear Algebra and Differential Equations
* Physics: One year of physics (calculus-based) with labs
* Chemistry: One semester of general chemistry and the lab (Chemical Engineering does not require this lab but does require two additional courses of organic chemistry plus labs; Biomedical Engineering does not require this lab but does require one additional course of organic chemistry plus lab.)
* Computing: One semester of computer programming in "C++"
* English: A minimum of four (4) credits of English Composition.
* Please Note: Sixteen (16) credits of Humanities and Social Sciences are required for graduation, of which six (6) must be humanities. All 16 credits of humanities and social science need not be completed prior to transfer.

huh? transfer is junior standing...as in your transfer AS a JUNIOR...when they mean transfer it's as a Junior...the pre-reqs seem ridiculous to you because you are applying for sophomore transfer, which usually isn't the case with transfers. The requirements listed on that website is designed for junior standing transfers. Normally people apply as Sophomores for Junior standing.

Im a sophomore now and have completed Calc I, II, III and Linear Algebra (also done Physics I, II, Chem I, II, C++ Programming, Writing I, II)...doing Physics III and Diff Eq now...these are standards for Engineering curriculums everywhere...

Regardless of who it is designed for, it is applied to everyone. I was not excused from the pre-reqs even though I am going to be a sophomore.

So, sophomore transfers basically have no chance whatsoever to get into the college of engineering?

As for linear algebra, try doing anything useful in computer graphics without it.

That's correct--sophomores basically have no shot.

Well, with that said, what should you achieve as a freshman in-stater if you want to transfer into the LSA. This is with poor high school grades and reasonably good ACT (30).

Really really good college grades and good essays. Recommendations obviously are also very important.

Why does it matter if you can't get in as a sophmore (well, you can I guess, but it's difficult)???

Just stay in your other school for a year (or go to CC if need to leave for financial reasons) and transfer as a junior with all the courses needed. This will also be a bit less hectic for those who want to transfer anyway, and it will weigh less on HS grades, which are probably not great considering you are transfering (rather than being there in the first place).

Those are difficult reqs for a freshmen to get, but then do them in two years and go to Michigan as a junior.

Current School: CA community college
Major: English/ Pre-Education
GPA: Decent :P (3.5-4.0)
Units: 96 (quarter)
EC: VP of Associated Student Body (representing ~20,000 students), Tutor, Work, Church, Basketball (hobby), Phi Theta Kappa, and HS Lincoln-Douglas debate judge
Recommendation: Yes, from my first English professor.
Decision: Accepted.

It's simply a matter of 3 years at Michigan versus 2. I'm heading to a cc, so the clubs offered won't be able to hold a candle to Michigan's. I'm into game development, and I think I can hazard a guess as to how hard it will be to find someone with like interests at a cc.

Bokchoi,

GPA: Decent (3.5-4.0)

What does that mean?
