I know that rankings wise, U Mich and GT are ranked almost similar in graduate Electrical Engineering. Now since I go for "prestige" and "name" of the university, kindly tell which is better, UMich or GT? I heard that Michigan is a more prestigious school as its a member of American Association of Universities and considered a Public Ivy.

I would say Michigan, but I’m somewhat biased, since both of my parents went there and I was raised hearing how glorious it is.

There is no wrong answer, and the criteria you are using is silly. Visit the two and see which one YOU like better. Both are EXCELLENT engineering schools.

Both are very well respected institutions but Michigan has more name recognition nationally and internationally.

The poster above me is correct - there’s no wrong answer. But I personally prefer Michigan.

I would go to the University of Michigan

the cold is not worth the slight increase in overall prestige and name recognition unless you really really want to head into lucrative careers like IBD, S&T or MBB… If not I’d just go with the warm weather…
coming from houston, let’s say I freaking hate it here

haha coming from the north, it’s amusing to see people bundled up when it hits 60 degrees here in the South. It’s great to be still wearing t-shirt/shorts in November :)

As far as prestige and name goes, they’re probably about even. They’re both excellent institutions. Try to visit both campuses and see which one you think you’d fit in the best at.

If all else is even, consider where you want to live after you graduate. A degree from UM or GT can get you a job in any geographic region, but you’ll have more access to internships and eventually jobs around the area you’re going to school (yes recruiters from all over the country will come, you’ll just have more from around the area) so that’s something to think about.

Where are you from, what kind of career path are you looking at?

I’ve been at Michigan for 3 years now, electrical engineering major. I like it here…helps that I am an instate student. I think that ‘Public Ivy’ is a stupid designation…but anyways, Michigan is a world-class university and I don’t think you could go wrong by choosing Michigan. With that said, you can’t go wrong with Georgia Tech either. Visit the schools and see what you like.

Well ‘Public Ivy’ is the name given to Michigan by someone famous, I don’t remember his name (Check out wikipedia for that). Anyways I am a Canadian, and likely cannot visit the campuses. However you may say that GATech equals Michigan, but thats strictly for engineering and computer sciences. When I say “prestige”, I mean the overall impact factor associated with the university, like in terms of sports, traditions, great rankings across all fields, higher facutly to student ratio, lower acceptance rates and faculty acclaim etc., and I think Michigan beats Gatech in all these areas, right? Believe me or not, Ivy like prestige of your school does help in long term in your career.

You seem to have a pretty good idea of the answer you’re looking for already… So just go to Michigan, it’s a very good school - the only problem is that bearcats goes there.

haha, that made my evening.

Girls at Michigan are way hotter. Cough

whats wrong with bearcats? curious :8)

"whats wrong with bearcats? curious :8) "

he’s a nutjob

I suppose nothing really, everyone just gets tired of him relating everything to ibanking as if it was everyone’s goal. The comment he made earlier about “unless you wanted ‘IBD, S&T or MBB’” is rather out of character. Usually he acts like EVERY engineer should want that, not that some engineers do.

I’ve heard that the, uh, chick ratio is kind of terrible at GaTech. On the flip side, at least a lot of… uh… cool, attractive guys… go there…

Seriously, though, I don’t know what Michigan is like, but I’m not a fan of GaTech’s campus.

At least in Atlanta you wouldn’t have to worry about crime, traffic, pollution, or a 15-hour drive back to Canada.

I don’t normally like unsubstantiated and wild story-telling, but you might want to check out the following:

Also, according to **************…
Michigan wins in campus housing
Michigan wins in terms of being less strict with rules
GaTech wins in terms of having better computing facilities (labs, etc)
GaTech wins in terms of diversity
GaTech wins in terms of having a lower-profile drug scene
Michigan wins in terms of having good facilities (aesthetics)
Michigan wins in terms of having better/more girls
Michigan wins in terms of having better/more guys
GaTech wins in terms of local atmosphere (surprising)

You just gave me a great idea for the title of my new book about the problems on Wall Street.

I retain my personal image rights. 50/50 split and we have a deal. If you need to raise capital from VC, I can provide advisory service

"You just gave me a great idea for the title of my new book about the problems on Wall Street. "
I think one of the biggest problems on Wall street is that the barack crew can’t find a case against it. For instance, the INNOCENT, HONEST, HARDWORKING AND TAXPAYING wallstreet fund managers recently prevailed against the ridiculous and baseless claims by the government low-lives. This makes the Barack Socialist REGIME look bad. That must be a huge problem and it’s all wallstreet’s fault…
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financetopics/financialcrisis/6540854/Ex--Bear-Stearns-fund-managers-Cioffi-and-Tannin-cleared-in-blow-for-US-government.html

Define epic fail:
In his push for the socialist stimulus bill, the wall-street hater in the white house said, “If we fail to act, we are likely to lose millions more jobs and the unemployment rate could reach double digits.”
Did I hear that unemployment rate is at 10.2% now barack boy?? Oh my…it can’t be…we passed your wealth distribution bill though…
Now let’s do a graphical illustration for the barack crowd who can’t read…http://www.heritage.org/Research/Economy/images/wm2685_chart1.gif
