U Michigan Chances?

White OOS female.
Applied RD because I wanted to take the ACT after the EA deadline.

SAT: 2140 (640 CR, 730 writing, 770 math)
ACT: 32 (E 35, M 30, R 34, S 28, Writing 10/12).

GPA: 3.7/4.0W. (the biggest concern w/ my app)
-My school does not report unweighted GPAs because it is a very academically competitive school. Additionally, honors and AP classes are weighted equally with five extra points, whereas some schools make AP classes worth ten extra points.
-My gpa is particularly low because of one bad grade in an honors math class (High C). I dropped halfway through the year and got better grades but it still stands out and negatively affected my gpa.

-I took multiple honors classes and one AP class during my junior year.

Senior year courses:
AP literature & composition
AP government & politics
AP environmental science
AP Spanish VI
Calculus
-I took three AP tests last year but I didn’t do well so I’m not going to report my scores.

ECs:
Emergency Medical Technician for two years
-Over 900 community service hours.
-I was also recently elected to be the “Senior Cadet Leader”, meaning I’m in charge of all of the other EMTs that are in high school.
-Have spent some time co-instructing my old EMT class, in which I earned the highest grade.

National Honor Society
-Was given an award for having the most community service hours out of all of my peers.

Shadowed a plastic surgeon over the summer.

Soccer
-Captain of the JV team as a freshman
-Named “Most Improved” on Varsity during sophomore year
-Junior and senior year, I was a Varsity starter.
-Played for a club team that won two state championships, one of which was hosted by a national soccer league (USYS National Championship Series State Cup Championship). The team was ranked among the top ten teams for my age group in the country.

Varsity track & field athlete since freshman year.

*****My dad attended UMich’s business school, if that helps at all.

Michigan is by far my first choice and I don’t know what I’m going to do if I don’t get in.

I don’t really have much to say, other than that you are very likely to be accepted.

ACT is pretty strong and GPA isn’t perfect but is not something you should be concerned about: it is beyond made up for with your EC’s. You have shown incredible dedication and passion with your medical work and service hours, and your athletics are very strong. Plus, you are a legacy…

Good luck! You should be very confident. I’d also really appreciate it if you could take a look at my most recent chance me… I have way too many

?

You should re-weight the GPA using the Michigan scale from your HS letter grades. All A=4, all B=3 etc. That is what the adcom is going to use.

Show interest in the school! Email your state rep and sit in on a class or something. It will go far

I would say with your combination of legacy, strong test scores/gpa, and extensive community service, you are a very strong candidate. That being said, at and super competitive public school getting accepted OOS is and uphill battle. Hope this helped, would appreciate a chance back! Thanks in advance

your act is pretty average and your gpa should be at least a 3.9 uw umich recalculated if you are oos. legacy status can only help so much but make sure your gpa is in range! 3.8-4.0 range

I was accepted with UW GPA of about 3.74 if that helps, from OOS! I think you’ll be fine!!

Big questions…what state are you from…and what is your intended major?

3.7 GPA out of state isn’t going to work with your 32 ACT. Too low. Particularly, if you’re from a state with a lot of interest in UMich.

If you’re applying to anything STEM, your bad math grade could be the nails in your coffin.
They also might see your poor AP tests as a concern.

Good luck, but have a solid back up plan.

I’d put your chances at about 25%

I’m from NJ and I plan on majoring in biology. I didn’t submit my AP scores. I emailed my state rep and told her that I would definitely attend if accepted so hopefully that, along with my ECs, will help, although I’ll still probably get rejected. Thank you for the feedback.
