U. of Alabama vs. William and Mary

I am trying to decide between going to W&M (in-state) or taking advantage of Alabama's NMF scholarship and heading down to Tuscaloosa. I hope to attend law school after I graduate, but am still undecided on an undergrad major. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

How much would it cost you to attend W&M?

UA!!! Roll Tide.

Have you visited Bama?

How much will W&M cost you? Will you have any debt?

How will you pay for law school?

Why do you have football as your screen name?

m2ck: I have visited, and I love both the UA & WM campuses. I won’t graduate WM with any debt, however I’d have to take out less loan money for law school if i were to go to UA. And in regards to my screen name, I love football (although big football definitely won’t be a deal maker)

And I’m guessing we’ll also run into the same problem with New York schools. They don’t need the out-of-state students, so why should they pay for them? Am I correct?

Is that because your parents would help you with law school with the money they save at Bama?

Well, it doesn’t sound like you have anything to lose by at least starting at Bama. You could either stay there, or transfer to W&M after after a year or two. But, if you start at W&M, you can’t go back and get the scholarship.

Dear football19. I am faced with a similar dilemma as you. I am looking to eventually go to law school, too, but am looking at W&M and Notre Dame (another big football school!) I am opposite in that I would have no loans/debt with Notre Dame and quite a bit with W&M. It is a tough choice. Doing a lot of second guessing. I love W&M and their uniqueness as well as history. Good luck on your decision!!

I would probably pick Alabama.

Lets get serious. Go to W&M and watch Alabama football on TV. This is a no-brainer.

^ Well he/she certainly couldn’t do it the other way around as far as the fball watching goes, but I vote for go to UA then W&M Law.

Are you serious? W&M all the way. Its a much, much better school.

^ Everything else equal, sure.
But, he has clearly stated that he will be saving significantly by going to UA. Shouldn’t that be taken into consideration? Just how much is W&M worth?

“I’d have to take out less loan money for law school if i were to go to UA.”

How much less? Like, $50k+ less?

You are mistakenly charged with murder. You walk into your lawyers office. Which diploma would you want to see on the wall?

Thats what W&M is worth.

Given the fact that you have the financial means to attend William & Mary, I would definitely go that route.

I don’t even think it is a close decision.

Besides the far greater prestige, I think you should push yourself academically to reach your highest potential.

My son had very high SAT scores, and could probably have received some significant money from University of Alabama, but I did not even have him apply.

He didn’t work that hard just to go to University of Alabama. Even if it were totally free. While Alabama is an improving school, it is nowhere near William & Mary’s league.

“You are mistakenly charged with murder. You walk into your lawyers office. Which diploma would you want to see on the wall?”

If I were charged with murder in Alabama, I’d very definitely want to see an Alabama diploma  – and I’m not a partisan for either school.

A “few” years back, a young lawyer named Hugo Black had a University of Alabama diploma on his wall…just over yonder in the halls of the U.S. Supreme Court. :)

swish, next time you check wikipedia…the guy who founded it, Jimmy Wales, has a UA diploma on his wall as well.

And then there is our current USD-I (Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence) Michael Vickers. Left UA and headed to Wharton Business School. Guess an Alabama degree as an undergrad didn’t hold him back too much.

imho, the OP can get a great education at either school, it is up to him, not to the school or its “prestige” factor to make the most of it. football19, go where you will be happy, do well and stay out of debt for as long as possible! Best wishes to you wherever you end up!

Swish quote: You are mistakenly charged with murder. You walk into your lawyers office. Which diploma would you want to see on the wall?

Obviously the above was written by someone who doesn’t realize that Bama has a top Law School.

Law School Rankings

29 …Alabama

35 …William and Mary

Do you want a do-over?

;)

UA attracts a boat load of NMF (National Merit Finalists), they got 144 in 2010-2011.

183 NMF frosh for 2011-2012

W&M is much better…go there
